This used bamboo box has two handles. There is an iron chain at the back, and on the front are eight Chinese characters: 宣钟善志,斗严书屋 (meaning item of Xuan Zhongshan from Douyan School). The owner of this box, Xuan Zhongshan, is a revolutionist who followed the footsteps of his older brother, Xuan Zhonghua. This box was used by Xuan Zhonghua during his student years in Zhejiang No.1 Normal School and later by Xuan Zhongshan when he was studying.

In 1915, Xuan Zhonghua was admitted to Zhejiang No.1 Normal School. Jing Hengyi, headmaster of the school, was an open-minded educator, one that was rarely seen those days. He was a supporter of the New Culture Movement of China and an advocate of the new, advanced knowledge. Xuan Zhonghua’s patriotic and democratic ideals were fully developed with such an enabling environment. He was a top student and became a social campaign activist very quickly. He kept a keen eye on national affairs, debated political issues with his classmates, and never stopped his pursuit of truth. He strongly opposed the feudal autocratic system and fought for democracy and freedom. When the May Fourth Movement spread to Hangzhou in 1919, Xuan devoted himself to the great cause right away and was elected as the student leader of The Students’ Federation of Hangzhou City. He then joined the All-China Students’ Federation and helped establish strong connections between the Hangzhou branch and its peer institutions. He changed his Chinese name into 中华, literally meaning China, to demonstrate his patriotic enthusiasm and determination to save the Chinese nation. The student campaigns he led complemented and reinforced the workers’ struggle, thus triggering a vigorous, anti-imperialist patriotic movement across Zhejiang province. Back in those days, this bamboo box was used to store books, stationery items, and clothes. In a sense, with wisdom in hold, this box stood as a silent witness to the historical ups and downs.

Xuan Zhonghua devoted his entire life to patriotic movements. In the summer of 1920, he graduated from Zhejiang No.1 Normal School and entered the workforce. He founded Qujiang Gongchao, the first newspaper of the workers in Zhejiang Province. In 1922, he co-founded Responsibility in Kanshan Town, Xiaoshan County. The weekly journal ran for 15 issues from its initiation date on 27 November 1922 to 19 March 1923. Xuan himself wrote over ten sharply-focused, thought-provoking political critiques for this journal, including Those Who Suffer in Backward Industrial Powers, China in the Eye of Americans, How to Save our Country, Peasants and Revolution, and Educators in China. These essays protested bitterly against feudalism, imperialist aggression, and the corrupt Chinese authorities. In his writings, Xuan expressed the deepest sympathy for the hundreds of millions of Chinese workers and peasants living in dire misery and pointed out the irreplaceable role of the workers and peasants in China’s society.

Xuan Zhonghua’s words and deeds set an example for his younger brother. Under Zhonghua’s influence, Zhongshan chose to participate in the revolution. Around the May Fourth Movement in 1919, the two brothers played active roles in student campaigns, workers movements, and both joined the Communist Party of China. During the First Cooperation between Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China in the 1920s, Zhongshan worked as an official in the Rural Affairs Department in the Kuomintang Zhejiang Division, taking charge of financial accounting. However, in April 1927, the two brothers were arrested during the anti-revolutionary coup. On April 17, 29-year-old Xuan Zhonghua was cruelly executed. A couple of days after, Xuan Zhongshan was brutally killed in a reactionary prison in Hangzhou. He was only 27.

The Xuan family treasures the items left behind by the two brothers. Though some paper documents contained in the box were damaged, the box itself was carefully stored by their mother in the family attic and remains well-preserved. In December 1992, in fond memories of the Xuan brothers, Xuan Qinfu, their nephew, donated the precious items to the Shanghai Longhua Martyrs’ Memorial. And among them is this used bamboo box. In September 2001, the bamboo box was examined by the evaluation panel for modern and contemporary cultural items from China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration and was recognized as a first-class cultural heritage item.

This used bamboo box is now on display in the Longhua Martyrs’ Memorial Hall. It tells the visitors how the Xuan brothers, coming from a peasant family, grew up to be well-educated and aspiring young men. Influenced by the advanced ideals, they devoted themselves to the revolution and sacrificed their young lives for the liberation of the Chinese people. Their stories will always be a cherished legacy for future generations to come.
