Dear Everybody,

I owe you an Open Class from December, which I rescheduled for January after you informed me that neither of the December dates worked for more than one or two people. I hope this week will prove to be better time to set aside an hour for a literary lecture and discussion. If you still cannot make it, please know that I will record the Open Class, and it will be available for 72 hours.

OPEN CLASS

Time: Thursday, January 25, 2024, 20:00 (Beijing)

Meeting ID: 874 9706 2148

Passcode: 123456

As we begin a series of classes on Feminism and The Short Story, who better could light our way than Virginia Woolf? Authors so often echo, respond to, and pay homage to Virginia Woolf. In her stories, Alice Munro refers to A Room of One’s Own and To the Lighthouse, and I believe she makes many other references most subtly inserted.

In this Open Class, we will talk about Mrs. Dalloway, a novel where Woolf has created a new style of writing by combining her observations from the books of James Joyce and Marcel Proust, as well as from the works of post-impressionist and cubist painters. Mrs. Dalloway might be a bit difficult to get into due to the constant movement to and from different perspectives, the lack of plot, remembrances and flashbacks, mental problems, fears, and desires. Feel free to join without any preparation, and let me take you through the opening pages of the novel. I hope you’ll be inspired to read it afterward.

Open Classes are open and free to anybody interested in setting aside an hour for an intellectual discussion of a brilliant literary work. Please share this post and invite your friends who’d enjoy taking a free reading and writing class!

Join us for the regular classes. We begin with Alice Munro on January 30. Great stories await!
