New & Hot: Spread, Café Bar For Tartines & Wine

Rachel Gouk nomfluence 2023-11-23

Spread is an all-day café bar in Jing'an that does tartines (open-faced sandwiches) and wines.

It's definitely going to be a popular spot for the neighborhood.

It's located on the corner of Shaanxi Bei Lu and Wuding Lu in a bright, sunny space with outdoor seating. The dining room is small but spacious and comfortable. There's also additional counter seating looking out onto the street. Oh, and it's dog-friendly indoors!

If you're someone who works from home, this might become your new midday canteen.

Behind the concept is Guillaume Tu, a long-serving member of the Shanghai F&B industry. He was previously with Mr & Mrs Bund and Villa Le Bec. This is his first solo project.

The Food

Tartines & More

The foundation of Spread is tartines, the flavors of which are inspired by Guillaume’s experiences throughout Asia. But it's not all just tartines on the menu. There are salads, cocottes, gratins, charcuterie, and cheese boards, too. Plus, dinner will launch shortly after Chinese New Year.

The tartines have a creative twist and good flavor combinations, all made with high-quality ingredients. It's all very considered, easy-going, and tasty. Also on the menu are salads (from ¥55), soups (¥38), charcuterie (from ¥78), cheese plates (from ¥138), and a couple of desserts.

Here's what to expect:

La Ciboulette (¥55) - Yoghurt, fresh and pickled cucumber, and a ton of chives. I could eat this everyday.

Vitello Tonnato (¥78) - Slices of veal, tuna spread, capers, fried shallot rings and arugula. Delicious.

Iberico Pork Loin (¥75) - Thinly shaved pork loin, light fermented tofu spread, XO sauce, and coriander. A light funk from the tofu spread, and a touch of umami from the XO sauce.

Rosbif (¥85) - Slices of roast beef, mustard cream cheese spread, lettuce, thin slices of raw shallot, and fresh herbs. Very tasty. It's a sufficient portion for lunch.

La Raclette (¥88) - This is basically raclette on toast. Potatoes, raclette cheese, parma ham, serrano ham, and white ham. It's a hefty serving and it's definitely one of the heavier tartines on the menu.

There are also some weekly specials, most of which will end up on the dinner menu post-CNY. This is the Endive, Ham & Bechamel Gratin (¥95). It's soooo rich. Definitely a dish to share.

As for drinks, wines by the glass start from ¥75, bottles from ¥300. Coffee prices are very competitive—an Americano is ¥20. There are also teas (¥28) and Pao sodas (¥32).

It's a great addition to the neighborhood. The food is tasty and well-priced, and they don't scrimp on the toppings. The direct sunlight is a big plus, and I love that it's also dog-friendly. Go check it out!
