Terrace 8 is Jing'an district's best-kept secret—it's a sprawling rooftop terrace on the eighth floor of The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai. The spacious lawn commands a stunning 180-degree panoramic view with the historic Shanghai Exhibition Centre at the forefront. 

Usually, Terrace 8 is only open to the hotel's residents, but come every weather-worthy season, the terrace is spruced up and opened to the public.

It's a simple setup complete with cushioned lawn chairs shaded by canvas umbrellas sprawled across meticulously trimmed lawn.

Food on offer this year highlights barbecue, courtesy of Executive Chef Jue Xian Chia.

Dishes are grilled to order at the terrace, and include snack-friendly plates like marinated cajun chicken skewers, squid stuffed with tomatoes and onions served with chili dipping sauce, and chicken and pineapple satay with peanut sauce.

Larger mains to share include dishes like rosemary grilled lamb rack and shoyu short rib, as well as burgers and sandwiches.

The beer selection is a mix of international and local beer brands, including Shanghai’s own homegrown brand Shanghai Love, whose IPA and Blonde are available on draft. Choose from familiar favorites like Chang, Erdinger, and Guiness, or sip on brews from Mountstone (Fuzhou), Wuhan’s No. 18 Brewing, or Beijing’s Red Ears Brewing. Tsingtao is ¥38, craft beers from ¥68.

Also availble are champagnes and wines by the glass (from ¥105) or by the bottle (from ¥500), or you can opt for the free-flow champagne deal, four hours starting from ¥528.

Afternoon tea is served at Terrace 8 on Saturday and Sunday from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. 

Terrace 8 is also open for private events and celebrations including birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. Call to inquire.
