67,000 Expats Investigated for Illegal Stay & 43,000 Deported!

In 2022, the National Immigration Administration had investigated and dealt with a total of 67,000 foreigners for illegal stay in China (including entering the country, working or staying illegally ), of which 43,000 were deported.


On January 17, the National Immigration Administration announced at a press conference that, the National Immigration Administration departments had checked a total of 115.7 million people entering and exiting the country in 2022, including 64.635 million mainland residents, 46.591 million residents from Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and Taiwan, and 4.473 million foreigners.
 
Throughout the year, 67,000 foreigners who entered the country illegally, resided illegally or were illegally employed got investigated and punished in accordance with the law. Punishments such as warnings, fines, administrative detention, and deportation within a time limit were given accordance with the law, and 43,000 of them were deported.




According to the law, foreigners who illegally stay, will get warning. when the circumstances are serious, a fine of 500 Yuan for each day of illegal residence and a total of not more than 10,000 Yuan shall be imposed or detention for not less than 5 days but not more than 15 days. When a foreigner under the age of 16 illegally resides because of the guardian or other person responsible for guardianship fails to fulfill his guardianship obligations, the guardian or other person responsible for guardianship shall be given a warning and fined not more than 1,000 Yuan.

For foreigners who work illegally, a fine between 5,000 and 20,000 Yuan shall be given; when the circumstances are serious, they shall be detained for not less than 5 days but not more than 15 days, and shall also be fined between 5,000 and 20,000 Yuan. Companies/individuals who hire foreigners illegally shall also be punished according to the law.

After the COVID-19 control at borders formally relaxed on January 08, personnel inspected by NIA has increased significantly.

At present, NIA departments check an average of 501,000 people per day at the ports, with an increase of 48.2% compared to that before the border re-opening and 26.3% compared to that before the epidemic.
