One of your friends wants to study abroad for one year, but after he comes back, he needs to take courses for another year and then graduate. Would you encourage him to do this?

Generally speaking, I don’t think it’s a good idea to join such a program since for one thing, he won’t learn much during that one year abroad. Some people may believe it a great experience to study in a foreign university since he could expand his vision. However, I think one year is far from being enough. It takes a long time to adapt to a new environment, which requires him to deal with homesickness and make friends, not to mention the big differences between Chinese and Western educational systems. Besides, I do think it’s beneficial for students to study abroad, it’s just that he needs to pick the right time. For example, he may apply for postgraduate program. In this way, his four years in college won’t be interrupted and he’d get the chance to fully experience campus life in another country.

Do you think library would continue to exist with the increasing popularity of e-books?

I think library would exist despite of the increasing popularity of e-books. It is true that some people download hundreds of books into their smartphones and read them wherever they like, whenever they want. However, others still favor the library because of the atmosphere. Just imagine a bunch of people sitting together with thousands of books around. They either quietly focus on their own books, or find a meeting room to have a discussion. Such experience is certainly more enjoyable than staring on the screen on the subway. What’s more, many libraries have undergone some renovation, aiming at offering a more pleasant environment. For example, some libraries now have a café inside where readers could get tasty refreshments, others may hold a book review session or even invite some artists to give a presentation from time to time. All these activities would upgrade the library and make it more appealing to the public.
