Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of giving children financial reward when they do well at school.

I think children may be motived to work hard if they could get monetary reward for good school performance. Kids may lack interest in study, which seems far less appealing than recreational activities such as video games and sports. According to some research, part of the reasons why people are attracted to video games is that they could get instant reward after completing certain tasks, and it is this rewarding system that drive players keep going. Similarly, financial reward could be an incentive that encourages children to make progress in school. However, this behavior comes with drawbacks. For one thing, parents cannot keep providing monetary reward from primary school to university. Once the payment stops, it may only be a matter of time before children lose the driving force to learn. In fact, financial reward is only the means rather than the end of it. What really counts is children’s curiosity in knowledge, and that’s what generates long-lasting passion for learning.

It is never too late to get a degree in university.

I think it’s never too late for people to get a degree in university. Some people claim that people beyond certain age, such as 65, should retire from work; and it’s kind of useless for them to get a college degree. However, I don’t think it’s reasonable to judge a person simply based on his/her age. We always hear stories about some senior citizens making accomplishment in fields like science or business. People deserve the chance to study in university and earn a degree if they have the willingness to learn. Besides, what does “late” mean anyway? We may try to get a degree for various reasons. For example, some do want to get a certificate and find a job later; others may wanna realize their dreams in their youth; still others simply enjoy the academic experience and the degree may be a side benefit for them. All in all, as long as we have the passion for knowledge, it’s never too late to be a learner.
