Your teacher has canceled the class tonight and your friends invite you to watch a movie together. However, an exam is coming. Will you go to watch movie with your friends or studying for the exam?

I would stay on campus and review for the upcoming exam since it’s more important for me. The movie will be on for a while, at least half a month and even if I cannot watch it in the movie theater later, there’ll always be resources online. In contrast, the exam requires more immediate attention, I mean, lots of things need to be done in order for me to get well prepared. For example, I need to go over the notes to recall and memorize the key information covered in class; probably there’ll be several questions that I feel confused about and then I’ve got to figure them out by either independent study or with the help from a tutor. After all, I want to get an A rather than just a pass on the exam. Maybe later when the exam is over, me and my friends would hang out together. We may go shopping, hiking, or watching movies. It actually doesn’t matter what we do as long as we spend the time with each other’s company.

Some people like home schooling while others prefer to go to school. Which one do you think is better for students?

I think it’s more beneficial for students to go to school than simply receiving home-schooling. The campus environment cannot be experienced at home. At school, students meet classmates whom they chat with during breaks and, in class, they could have discussion, exchanging ideas and negotiating with each other so as to get more comprehensive understanding of the knowledge. What’s more, this also contribute to more developed social skills since during the communication, they’ve got to learn how to get their ideas across, how to refute others’ views without hurting their feelings and so on. Things like this would help them form better inter-personal relationship. Moreover, school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities held by clubs, sports teams, and some student associations, which make campus life a lot of fun. If students only do home schooling, they’re gonna miss out on many events and I think it’s a pity since education is not all about academic programs; instead, it’s a whole package which also includes physical and social development .
