A friend of yours always has difficulty falling asleep before important events like exams or job interviews. What suggestions would you give him?

I think there’re several things he may try in order to fall asleep. For one thing, doing the final preparation at the night before the event is not a good idea. It is true that he should get well-prepared for exams or interviews. However, preparation at the last minute would probably backfire since he is already quite nervous and during the process, more and more questions may emerge, which could only make him confused and even start wondering whether he can survive the next day. Given that he won’t be able to make any major improvement at that time, I think he may as well just relax and lie on the bed. Maybe he could try listening to some soft music or drinking a cup of warm milk, which I’ve heard have a calming effect and could help people sleep tight.

Employees should not be allowed to check personal messages or e-mails during working hours.

I don’t see why companies should forbid their employees to check personal messages or e-mails during the work hours since such a policy is not feasible, I mean, how would we tell whether a person is sending messages with his co-workers or friends? Or, when he’s chatting with a colleague through messages, whether they’re talking about something relevant to work cannot be closely supervised. Since it’s almost impossible to watch each text or e-mail sent or received by the employees, the company may as well not bother regulating the content. Moreover, although communication about personal issues may affect their working efficiency, as long as employees could complete their tasks within the deadline, I think it’s OK to allow them conduct some personal stuff in the office.

I think there’re some drawbacks of studying or working in a new place. For one thing, people may have difficulty adapting to the local life, which further affect their academic or professional performance. When I was in the graduate program in U.K., I didn’t quite enjoy the climate in the northern part of England, which was gloomy most of the time; and the punishing wind made me suffer in winter. As a result, some students were seriously affected, both physically and mentally. A friend of mine even dropped out of the program since the British weather dampened her spirit and her condition was not good during the first several months. Moreover, people may miss their parents or friends and this kind of homesickness would also have a negative influence on their life in the new place.

I think children need to listen to or watch the news even when they’re little. Some people may argue that news are boring and kids would be more interested in something more fun such as animations; besides, children are too young to form any serious opinions about news events. However, there are various kinds of news reports, ranging from political, economic to scientific or recreational, some of which do attract children. What’s more, I think we should give children more credit when it comes to their understanding of news events. After all, it’s totally subjective and there’s no right or wrong answer regarding personal views. By watching news, children would get more familiar with the current affairs and learn to form and voice their opinions, which helps develop their independent thinking skills.
