A friend of yours doesn’t want to ride bike to school anymore, so he plans to do some part-time job in order to get the money to buy a car. What do you think about this idea?

I don’t think it’s a good idea to buy the car since it’s gonna affect his school performance, which is supposed to be students’ priority. Even a car of the average quality may cost him a fortune, not to mention the subsequent expense of repair and maintenance. Given students’ tight budget, he may have to work a lot in order to cover the bills. As a result, he won’t have enough time to spend on studying, let alone socializing or other stuff. I think he will miss out on many important events and activities. Moreover, although a car may come in handy sometimes, he could find other alternatives. For example, if he wants to go on a trip or simply commute to campus, he may join a ride-sharing program. Besides, riding a bike is good exercise. So I suggest that he think twice instead of rushing to any decision.

Generally speaking, I don’t think this program would do much good to the university or the local people. For one thing, unlike the students, who usually come to classes well-prepared, people from local community often attend courses without finishing the pre-class reading or other assignments. As a result, they may ask some basic questions, which would slow down the pace of the course. Plus, considering that they’ve been away from campus for quite a long time, what if they unintentionally cause a scene? Their presence may already be enough to draw students’ attention. On the other hand, since the local residents won’t get any feedback for assignments, they miss the necessary guidance to learn and make progress. I think they may register for some formal courses if they really wanna further their education.
