BSB students at the Nord Anglia STEAM Festival China 2019
S.T.E.A.M. Festival
On 16th to 19th January, six Year 6 students and three Year 9 students travelled to Hong Kong to attend Nord Anglia’s first ever regional S.T.E.A.M. Festival.
After successfully gaining a place on the trip through a series of ‘hack the tube’ challenges and application process, students found themselves in Nord Anglia International School, Hong Kong along with eight other China region schools.
The 1st day saw the students engage in their very own comic-con event showcasing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M). work across their schools, and accessing the latest technology such as VR and student made app inventions. A variety of activities from building underwater drones, programming air drones and coding was then ran through the afternoon.
This was followed up on the 2nd day by the MIT inspirited 2.009 build project. Students were challenged within their school groups to create a vehicle capable of transporting ‘Captain Egg’ (on this year’s theme of super heroes) across land, sea and air!
Following the ideate, model and test approach, over 20 ideas were drawn up by the students leading to two final designs split across the Year 6 and 9 teams. After a long day building and presenting their ideas, the vehicles were put to the test where our BSB Shunyi Year 6 came a very respectable 5th position and Year 9 tied for 2nd position, ending with a 3rd position Bronze Award after the fastest finger first tie-breaker decisions.
Students also recorded and edited their own film of the event and enjoyed a celebration lunch of their achievements over the 2 days.

“The STEAM trip was a fantastic experience. I got to make new friends, build a battle robot and make our own verson OF MITs project 2.009. We had to build a vehicle that could float on water, roll down a ramp and survive a fall from the top of a building. Our group ended up getting 3rd place. During this trip we also got to go to a carnaval and we Also got to have a movie night. Overall it was an amazing experience that has left me with great memories.”

“My favourite part were the different experiences and workshops we had. The festival was very well organized but they could improve the food they had. The materials and all the electronic rules were very good. The movie night and the carnival was really fun and relaxing. They provided enough activities to let people get to know each other and our own school members. It was a very nice and exciting trip.”
