Brian Chesher
University Counsellor
Thirteen years of learning, thirteen years of teachers and classmates, thirteen years of after school activities, thirteen years of ups and downs. Thirteen years culminating in a powerful rite of passage - graduation. It is the beginning of the transition to adulthood.
For our Year 13 students the beginning of this transition began last February when I met with the then Year 12s and introduced the university application procedure. Now nearly a year later after a great deal of personal exploration and research of possible university final destinations and majors of study, the large majority of our Year 13 students have received offers from universities around the globe.
A great deal of credit must be given to our Year 13s as not only have they prepared for the next stage in their academics and their lives, but they have had to go through the final stages of their high school career in a truly unusual manner. Their academic efforts have been cut short due to cancelled IB final exams; for better or worse. The future of how and when they begin their university journey is filled with uncertainties. However, as I communicate with many universities they give me hopeful information that I regularly share with our courageous soon to be graduates. Universities are fully aware of their situations and they are expressing that their number one priority is that they continue to do everything that they can to support our students’ success in their passage through to the next stage of their lives.
As you can see there is a plethora of university logos. These logos that you see represent our Year 13s efforts and their rewards. Their reward is simple; although the process is not. Each logo represents at least one acceptance offer to that university. As I often explain to up and coming students and parents, BSB students move to the 4 corners of the Earth when we have taught them all we can. They end up studying in every region of the world: Asia, Europe, UK, Canada, USA, (South Africa, South Korea and Australia due to deadlines these offers come later).
I am grateful to be able to work with such bountiful young minds and I am happy that I can be a supportive part of their transition. Please join me in celebrating these offers of acceptance, for soon they will make their final decisions and will be on their way. “Sic Itur Ad Astra”, translated from Latin as, “So We Go To The Stars”, this is my high school’s motto and I think it a fitting wish for our Year 13 students.
Richard Thornhill
Principal
I would like to congratulate our graduating class of 2020 on securing their offers at some of the world’s top universities in their chosen areas of study. The graduating class of 2020 are a group of fine young people, they have worked hard over many years to ensure they can pursue their dreams and as can be seen from the extensive list of offers they have been successful in doing this. As befits a truly international school the offers listed are all over the world.
I would like to express my thanks to their teachers and families for the help and support that they have given to ensure success. Education is a partnership of home, school and student all have played their part in this success so thank you to all.
This year has been extraordinary … school systems and examinations have been closed and cancelled around the globe yet our graduating class have dealt with all the uncertainty and worry and are now ready to move to the next stage in their education. I hope future years are less traumatic and all of them achieve the success they deserve.
I congratulate them all and wish them the very best and the brightest of futures.
