However, in the echo chambers of Instagram and Twitter, it’s easy to feel like one’s voice isn’t being heard. For all the young people with strong beliefs about what changes our nation needs, there’s often a sense of hopelessness as the status quo drags on and on.
That’s why I’m partnering with the Biden Inaugural Committee for the MLK Jr. Day of Service to host an event empowering young people to advocate for themselves. City Councilwoman Jan-Michele Kearney will be speaking on how teens can become involved in local politics, while Tiktok activist Bella Thier--who has over a million followers--will speak on how we can all be activists in the digital age. Jasmine Payne, a representative from CARE International, will then lead a training on how to contact our representatives and use our voices to fight for change. Lastly, all participants will have a chance to apply what they’ve learned, research their representative, and send an email about a cause they’re passionate about.
