Background:Ten-year brilliant achievements of PV Polymers

In 2009,China Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the State Energy Administration jointly issued the《Notice on the Implementation of the Golden Sun Demonstration Project》, which started the large-scale PV plant installation in China and began the decade of China's PV access to the world's manufacturing, application and research.


In 2009, China added 160 MW new capacity, with a cumulative installed capacity of 300 MW; in 2018, China added 44.26 GW of new installed capacity, with a cumulative capacity of 174.8 GW. As one of the six brilliant achievements since the 18th National Congress, photovoltaic has been honored as a commemorative stamp of the 19th National Congress.


To generate more power from solar modules, the material is key. Photovoltaic polymer material bank is indispensable to China's PV achievements in the past decade.


Since 2009, PV polymer Encapsulants have undergone technological improvements such as localization, high/low permeability, anti-PID, anti-snail trail and so on. Different material routes, EVA or POE, or PVB or Silicone? All components are experiencing the test and the localization of raw material particles.


Since 2009, PV polymer backsheet materials have undergone structural selection of fluorine and non-fluorine, PVF/PVDF/THF or PTFE, experienced desert, ocean, extremely cold and hot weather, and other extreme climates. Material selection is still controversial, and transparent backsheet is developed to meet the challenge of double glasses.


Over the past decade, PV framing sealants have been completely replaced by localization, and the profitable era of renaming old products in the new market has ended. New products such as structural adhesive, framing tape and liquid silicone have been developed for double glass modules.


Over the past decade, PV polymer materials have been used not only for components, inverters, junction boxes, connectors and electricity transmission, but also for new materials such as floating PV plant, clamping pads, protection coatings, module corner guards, conductive adhesives, brackets & racks, module frames.


Over the past decade, PV polymer materials have continuous innovative technology, meet the challenges of new products, new applications, new standards, new tests, new structures, new cell technologies and new environments, and gradually finalizing technology selection in various attempts.


Over the past decade, the process of PV polymer material manufacturing has been improved, cost-down and better quality. The global marketing value of PV polymer has exceeded 50 billion RMB: 10% material cost is responsible for 25-year module life span.


Over the past decade, more than 80% of global photovoltaic polymer materials have been manufactured in China. Promoted by Industrial 4.0, many PV polymer manufacturers have been rated as intelligent manufacturing demonstration enterprises.


Ten years PV development history is a song of materials. On the eve of the coming PV Grid parity, PV polymers still remain their original aspiration, continuously move forward, dream 2019!

PV polymers meet challenges of high efficiency、durability、localization、anti-dumping、grid-parity、industry 4.0


As key material for PV industry, R&D of PV polymer material is listed to be core demonstration in <Energy technology innovation plan> of the 13th 5-year national development plan. Although the PV polymers has decades of field application, it still faces many challenges:


1. The local production of polymer raw material needs to be tested by the market and field installation. How far to realize the POE particle localization?

2. Looking at the increasing share of Double-Glass module, how to select PV encapsulants: POE or EVA? How about PVB and silicone?

3. PV backsheet material structure selection: with/out F? Which is the best combination: PVF/PTFE or PVDF/PTFE?

4. Looking at the increasing share of Double-Glass module, how does transparent backsheet to compete

5. Cost down by local manufacturing: how to respond the anti-dumping from India? 

6. From 300W to 400W,the power 4.0 era is coming, what is polymer 4.0?

7. The TCO in new HIT module is sensitive to moisture, how to select the encapsulant?

8. Material pack for Bi-facial module:Encapsulant, Frame, J-box, selant, rack and mounting, floating system?

9. PV grid parity is coming, what is the final opportunity to cut polymer cost?

10. PV grid parity is coming, home/commercial market is emerging, how to assure the safety, reliability of polymer materials?

11. PV grid parity could cause rapid market expansion. How to deploy the polymer and raw material capacity?

PV polymer seminars by Shang Solar Society and PV Top-runner forum

Since the first PV backsheet technical seminars in 2014, we have organized several discussion on encapsulants and backsheet. From 2017 we combined those to be PV polymer international conference (PPIC). Labeled as “Technical, Professional”, the conference has the extensive participation of almost 100% of research, raw material and polymer manufacturing, module companies, 3rd-party certification and testing related companies. Over 1500 participants and 5000 relatives were benefitted from the seminars.  


With the expansion of PV industry and the increasing participants every year, the conference attracted more and more end-uses, investors, insurance and consultant companies. Around 20% participants are from oversea.


The agenda is designed just two days before SNEC, which would be convenient for most attendees who has planned the SNEC visit.


Topic Plan

As the most important topic of <China PV Top-Runner innovation forum>, 2019 PV polymer international conference (PPIC) will extend the topic to PV polymer for bi-facial module, water PV plant, module 4.0, distributed PV installation, field test, intelligent manufacturing and other new PV trends.


Meanwhile, the PPIC will have PV Industry Ten-year Leader Panel Discussion. Entrepreneur, researchers and experts who had made significant contributions to PV industry will be invited to review the ten-year material development, tell the story you know or not know. The“PV Ten-year brilliant leader”award will be unveiled.


Meanwhile, the PPIC will have PV Polymer Innovation Story Collection. During the past ten years, the PV polymers had so many achievements in cost down, process and quality improvement, test and standard innovation…《PV Polymer Innovation Story Collection》 will invite the leading experts to tell whatever you know or not. All the stories will be posted on We-chat public and website.


Meanwhile, the PPIC will have China PV Industry Ten-year Brilliant Award and call for brilliant stories since Golden-Sun demonstration project 2009. All kinds of moving stories, no matter of material innovation or cost down, no matter of process improvement or power plant design, no matter of PV top-runner or policy maker, no matter of test & certification or intelligent manufacturing, are necessary to show the changes and development of PV industry in the past decade. Your story is our honor to show during PPPIC and SNEC.


Meanwhile, the 5-year anniversary ceremony of PV Top-runner innovation forum will be held by Shanghai Solar Energy Society. On the eve 2014 SNEC, we did the first seminar on PV backsheet. Since that, over 30 seminars focusing on PV supply chain were done, which significantly promoted the PV technology communication. The organizers will give “China PV Top-Runner innovation forum 5-year contribution award” to the partners and give“life achievement award”to the technical experts.


Meanwhile, the PPIC will have China PV Polymer 10-year innovation awards for those experts who made achievements for polymer developments, including research, application, quality, test, market, equipment and other technology, which would be incentive for future polymer development. The awards include:
