A ship reveals a lesser-known story spanning 82 years.
During the World War II, on the early morning of October 1, 1942, an armed Japanese cargo ship transporting 1,816 British prisoners of war (POWs) was torpedoed by the US Navy submarine off the coast of the Dongji Island in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. Over the 25 hours from when the ship was hit until it sank, the Japanese confined all the British POWs in the bottom of the ship and sealed the hatches with wooden planks and canvas. The British prisoners bravely attempted to escape by breaking through the hatches but were met with gunfire from the Japanese. At this critical moment, 198 fishermen from nearby islands of Dongji, Qingbang and Miaozihu, who witnessed the disaster, quickly came to the rescue. Braving their lives, they rowed small boats and saved 384 POWs from the water. Tragically, still over 800 British soldiers were either drowned or shot to death by the Japanese during the desperate escape. Later, 381 out of the 384 British POWs were captured once again to the Japanese ship after the door-to-door search by the Japanese army. Yet, three British POWs managed to hide in the seaside reef “Children’s Cave” with the help of the local fishermen, evading the extensive search. These three surviving soldiers revealed the carnage of the Japanese army to the international community upon their return home, leading to the protection of the above-mentioned over 300 British POWs. The ship involved in this tragedy was Lisbon Maru.
