Dear distinguished guests, colleagues, and students:

Good evening! Welcome to the 2019 Harmonia College High Table Dinner! On behalf of all the Harmonians, I would first like to thank our special guests for being here tonight. I also thank many other colleagues and friends, our college affiliated faculty members, and our wardens and residential tutors for joining us in celebrating this great tradition of our college.

Thanks to the generous donation of Mr. Yang Xiangbo and his family, Harmonia College was established on March 29, 2018 as the youngest college at CUHK Shenzhen. We greeted the very first cohort of 700 students last August. This year, we are hosting another 573 new residents, bringing the total number of residents to more than 1,200.

Time flies. It’s been a full year since Harmonia’s first High Table Dinner. This past year has witnessed the fast growth of our college into a fully functioning community. Not only has our student population nearly doubled, the facilities of the college are also nearly complete. As of today, functional rooms for study, recreation, sports, and artistic purposes have all been put into use and are open for students’ booking. The construction of the noise barrier along the North Channel high way has also been completed, which effectively put an end to the excessive noise that bothered our residents for too long.  We thank the city government and our university administration for their great support and effort to ensure a comfortable residential environment for Harmonians. The past year also witnessed great successes and achievements from our students. Harmonia’s first cohort of undergraduate students were all freshmen, who for the first time left home to start their adult life. I congratulate each of them for making the successful transition from a high schooler to a college student. Many of our students not only achieved excellence in academics, but were also well recognized in various competitions both on and off campus. Most noteworthily, Harmonians won the “Best Performance Award” for the second year in a row at the university mid-autumn festival celebration.

Congratulations to all our students and I cannot be more proud of you!  We thank the hard-work and collaboration from everyone including our students, office staff, wardens and residential tutors for contributing to all the   accomplishments in the past year.

As the founding college master, please allow me to take this opportunity to share my thoughts about our young college’s mission and the culture that we are going to build. Residential colleges are an essential part of our collegiate university system. Not only do they provide accommodations for our students, they also offer unique educational opportunities via informal programs and extracurricular activities that help our students grow well beyond their experiences in the classroom. The long and storied history of the college system around the world, dating back to centuries ago, has proven itself to be a very valuable addition to the university, one that complements the primary mission of an academic institution in a fundamental way. Harmonia College is honored to inherit such a great tradition and will try to accomplish such a great mission. In the past year, thanks to the efforts of our college office, wardens, and tutors, numerous activities, celebrations, workshops, lectures, and office hours have been organized. Among all these events, I was particularly involved in Tea Time with the College Master and English Corner, where I had a chance to meet and chat with many of our students regarding various topics including life as college freshmen, major choice and career path, time management, academic pressure, balance between academics and extracurricular activities, and many more. I found all these discussions helpful and enlightening, and I will certainly keep these and similar conversations going with many more of you in the future.  In addition to Tea Time and English Corner, all other college events and activities are also thoughtfully designed and organized, which are meant to help our students in their whole-person development intellectually, physically, and mentally.

Moving forward, we will continue to build a collegiate community with a spirit of aspiration, perseverance, and excellence. We will work closely with the university, our donor, our friends and colleagues to make Harmonia College truly a “home” for thousands of young students for many years to come.

Finally, I would like to say a few words about our keynote speaker today, Professor Lawrence Lau, who is going to speak on “The China-US Trade War,” a topic that is most timely and important in our current global economy, especially the China-US bilateral relationship. Professor Lau served as the President of CUHK from 2004 to 2010 and is deeply loved and respected by our CUHK community. In February 2010, with his great foresight, vision, and leadership, Professor Lau signed the cooperation memorandum with the Shenzhen municipal government, which laid the foundation for the establishment of CUHK Shenzhen. He provided indispensable guidance and support at the early stage of development for this new university. Professor Lau is truly a founding father of CUHK Shenzhen. Other than his connection with our university, he is also someone very special to our college. It was Professor Lau, along with President Xu Yangsheng, who extended the initial invitation for Mr. Yang Xiangbo to make the grand donation, leading to the establishment of our college. In fact, Professor Lau was also the one who picked Harmonia as the official English name for our college. Personally I found Harmonia much easier to pronounce than the previous forerunner, Oceanus, and simply for that, I feel grateful to Professor Lau for his decisive pick. Finally, Professor Lau is also connected to myself personally. I was very fortunate to serve as Professor Lau’s Research Assistant for four years while I was a Ph.D. student at Stanford University, during which period I had a chance to work with him closely and learn a great deal from him in person. To me, Prof. Lau is a genuine scholar, a knowledgeable professor, as well as a great mentor and advisor.  The topic of his keynote speech today also reminded me of a historical trip made by our former premier Zhu Rongji 20 years ago. In April 1999, Mr. Zhu Rongji visited the US in an attempt to resolve some major China-US trade disputes, aiming to clean up the last barrier for China to gain the membership of WTO. During that difficult visit, premier Zhu delivered a speech at MIT. While citing Prof. Lau’s research on the China-US trade deficit, premier Zhu Rongji referred to Prof. Lau as someone he personally respected and admired. It must be rare for premier Zhu to give such a high regard to a scholar, which says a lot about the academic reputation and policy impact of Prof. Lau’s work. Tonight, we will have the privilege to listen to an insightful talk from such a great scholar.

Thanks again Professor Lau for being here tonight. We all look forward to your talk. With that, let me stop here and give the floor to Professor Lau. I wish you all a great evening. Thank you!
