杰森图书馆从外面看就是一家小小的图书馆,但是你所不知道的是里面别有洞天。从小便在世界各地的寄宿家庭里长大的杰森对英国菜和肉有一种特别的情怀。每过一两个月,他都要推出一些新菜,当然都是他最爱的肉,我们也习惯了每个月都会有个周一在他那里把酒言欢、畅谈美食、各抒己见。餐厅开了一年了,杰森还如当初那样,认真、执着,相信每个人都能在这个月的新菜当中找到自己中意的那一款。

When I was called to review Jason’s Library I didn’t know much. I knew it’d opened a couple of years ago; knew it’s on Yuhangtang Road at the Matrix complex. A friend mentioned the Beef Wellington, imparting Jason’s Library with the reputation the Wellington carries with it (“expensive”, “beef”, uh… “British”…) also I was somehow aware of its innocuous speakeasy entrance. I hadn’t read MORE’s previous write-ups on Jason’s Library because I didn’t want to taint the purity of this review.

Jason’s Library is fantastic, Chef a.k.a Owner Jason is fantastic, his dishes and drinks are fantastic.

Many places have a speakeasy “lol-where’s-the-door?” entrance as a gimmick irrespective of interior design; Jason’s Library keeps the prohibition-era theme going throughout, with decor and music justifying the entryway aesthetics.

Jason’s a great guy; well-traveled, easy sense of humor, food nerd, hates hot pot—all characteristics of an ideal chef. Given these bonafides I ordered the weirder-sounding things on the menu. His specialty is British cuisine so I tried some Albion classics too.

First item my eyes drifted to was the Chilled Avocado Soup (牛油果冷汤, 48RMB); it wasn’t a thing I’d had before, wasn’t a thing I’d imagined before. It’s a perfect summer starter with a cool, delicately sweet taste. “Refreshing” isn’t the adjective I’d thought I’d apply to an avocado soup, but here we are. Try it, especially on a hot day.

Delicious British classics Scotch Eggs (苏格兰蛋, 58RMB) and Fish and Chips (炸鱼薯条, 68RMB) followed. The eggs were more decadent than I anticipated, fried, with two dashes of caviar on top. The halibut had a crisp, light breading and a perfect balance of fishiness and friedness. The chips were seasoned and served with ketchup and a pickle/honey/caper aioli.

Next, “Stargazy Pie” (仰望星空派, 138RMB), a seafood pie. I’m American, used to chicken or beef pot pies… I assume British people take fish in their pies for granted, but this was new to me. I loved it, I’m a convert! Filled with fish, mussels, squid, and gravy, I’m gonna order this again and again and pine for Merrie Olde England every time.

Jason’s love of meat came up as a topic repeatedly, and us ordering the King’s BBQ Beef Skewer (国王的BBQ牛链排, 168RMB) became an inevitability. These are huge, tender, and are served with a delicious pile of mushrooms.

Pizza? I’m oath-bound to try it; Jason has Parma (帕尔马披萨, 78RMB) and Margherita (玛格丽特, 58RMB), but also a no-tomato pizza: Smoky Green Pepper Steak (烟熏绿胡椒牛排披萨, 88RMB), with BBQ sauce and mozzarella. This is delicious, and Jason’s crust game is tight. Firm slices, delicious toppings, no greasy center to fill you with apprehension or regret!

Jason asked if anything was underwhelming. It happens I ordered the Truffle Orzo (黑松露米粒意面, 78RMB) in an attempt to get out of my always-order-risotto rut and I told him—while shoveling orzo into my mouth—orzo’d be better if it were risotto cuz risotto’s just better even though the flavors in this orzo are BANGIN’. When I finished talking there was no more orzo though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In additional to a standard spread of bottled boozes and cocktails, Jason’s Library has Spanish gin and tonics (68-78RMB), an art I thought lost from Hangzhou since the Baishaquan Calamity of 2015. These are huge, flavorful, different, and may very well be the best G+Ts in Hangzhou. I quit gin last year, what’s this job doing to me? I’ll be back for more.

Jason’s Library is filled with individually worthy reasons to visit and revisit, so many dishes are winners. What are you waiting for?
