Sound Recordist (Retired)

Hi Folks. I’ve been recording production sound in the New Zealand film and television industry for 40 years. I started out working on documentaries, then moved into television drama, TV commercials, TV magazine programmes and eventually into feature films.

I’ve been Production Sound Mixer (aka Sound Recordist) on 13 feature films including 7 of Peter Jackson’s movies: THE LOVELY BONES, KING KONG, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, THE FRIGHTENERS and HEAVENLY CREATURES.

For my work as Production Sound Mixer on THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING,  THE TWO TOWERS and THE RETURN OF THE KING I was nominated for three Oscars and three Baftas for Sound.

In 2001 I won the C.A.S. (Cinema Audio Society) award for Best Sound for THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING.

At the 76th Academy Awards in February 2004 I won an Oscar for Sound Mixing for THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING.

For my work as Production Sound Mixer on KING KONG I was nominated for a Bafta,  a CAS (Cinema Audio Society) award, and an Oscar for Sound.

Peter Jackson’s projects are always a lot of fun to work on, but one of my true loves is working on documentaries...real stories about real people.

For a number of years I have been a regional judge for the "48Hrs Furious Filmmaking" competition here in New Zealand. In 2012 over 600 films were made by young teams throughout New Zealand, all in 48 hours. (see http://www.v48hours.co.nz)

I also have the honour and privilege of being a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, so I get to vote for the Oscars each year...which means I get to watch a lot of free dvd ‘screeners’ of sometime not yet released movies.

I’m looking forward to being with you on 16 May 2019.
