The Xin'an River Reservoir, an important flood control project in the upper reaches of the Qiantang River, opened nine spillways for the first time in 61 years at 9am today to lower the crest of the floods.

Jiande: There has never been a nine spillways flood discharge, and the dams and bridges have not been tested by 9 spillways flood discharge; at present, all 30 bridges in Jiande have been closed, and 6978 people have been transferred. 219 hidden dangers were found in 43km dams. At present, all TV programs have been stopped and the nine spillways flood discharge situation has been broadcasted live on TV. 510,000 people in Jiande are ready for nine spillways flood discharge.

How long will take the flood to reach to Hangzhou?

Hangzhou Hydrological and Water Resources Monitoring Center said it was still in the process of prediction.

According to Binjiang District Emergency Management Bureau, at 9:30 this morning, the real-time water level of Qiantang River was 6.63 meters. It is expected that in the early morning of tomorrow (July 9), the flood will affect the water level of Qiantang River (Binjiang section).

As of 6am today, the river water level atmosphere in the West Lake District is 2.55m for Huxiao River, 2.44m for Xixi River, 2.54m for Yanshan River, 2.19m for Gudangwan River, 5.54m for Tuanjiepu, 5.80m for Sanhaopu, and 2.06m for Xihuan River. The water level of main urban rivers is within the safe range.

Due to the weather, tour boats, electric sightseeing cars and other projects in Xianghu Lake scenic area are suspended, and the opening time will be further notified. 55 people have been advised to leave, and the West Lake District Urban Management reminds citizens DO NOT go fishing today.

The Xin'an River Reservoir is more commonly known as Qiandao Lake. It is the main source of drinking water for Zhejiang and serves as a strategic reservoir for the Yangtze River Delta. The Qiantang River is the largest river in Zhejiang and is known for having the world's largest tidal bore.

Zhejiang has been ravaged by rounds of concentrated rainfall for over a month, with the accumulated precipitation reaching 455.1mm, 51 percent more than the previous average during the same period.

"Due to heavy downpours and floods in the upstream Anhui province, the water level of the lake rose rapidly and had exceeded the flood limited water level," said Zheng Chaohong, deputy director of the local water conservancy bureau.

"Weather forecasts showed that heavy rain will persist in areas around the reservoir in the next three days, and there's a risk of flooding even when the hydropower station runs at full capacity, so we decided to open the spillways," said Zheng.

The reservoir has a total of nine spillways, each can discharge water at a rate of 500 cubic meters per second.
