Atelier I-N-D-J AtelierINDJ 2021-08-11

New artwork by Atelier I-N-D-J adorns the the 12m tall marble lobby wall at the base of OMA’s recently completed Prince Plaza office tower, Nanshan, Shekou, Shenzhen.  Four years in the planning this site specific artwork is designed to capture a moment, injecting the sublime into office workers daily routine.

The work is located at end wall of a the large office lobby adjacent to the main lift lobby; itself the gateway to the 200m tall tower, some 60,000sqm of office space and home to a future 6,000 office workers.

Parabolic curve, parallel beams of light emitted from a singular point source.
Phylotaxis and the Fibonacci sequence

Since the Age of Enlightenment humanity has been grounded in logic and scientific reason to give order to complexity and make sense of the world around us.  In this tradition the art work is rooted in geometry, drawing upon mathematic rules and principals and referencing patterns present in nature; yet here manifest in cold steel cut by lasers and finished by hand.

Using mathmatics to interpret some of the forms present in mother nature

The parallels between man and nature are deliberate, an allegory to mankind’s supposed superiority in replicating nature - yet this must be seen as a cautionary tale: folly at best, tragedy at worst. Whilst we can replicate mother nature we can certainly never replace her, yet we can of course be continually inspired.

Geometric rigor and resultant simplicity of effect. Photo: Ian Douglas-Jones< swipe <

In this artwork there is complexity and a geometric rigor that seems to give way to a notion of the sublime, a fleeting moment of beauty in otherwise frenetically busy place.

The work focuses upon a singular point in the lobby, yet in itself is an object of focus.

The artwork is calibrated to focus on one particular location within the office lobby, a singular point where the refelctions of each of the 19 parabolas coalesce, at this location the viewer sees each at its full reflectance; its apogee of intensity. If the viewer is to move left right forwrd or back then this moment subsides, the effect lessening.
