报告摘要
Over the last few years we have studied the mechanisms of synthetic reactions involving gold complexes as catalysts. Using computational chemistry methods, we have identified a number of intriguing processes in which the gold complexes behave in ways that we had not expected. For example, gold complexes traditionally work by activating an alkene substrate towards reaction with the nucleophile. However in the case of gold-catalysed hydro-functionalisation of non-activated alkenes with phenol, we have found that the coordination of the gold(I) complex to a nucleophile (PhOH) enhances the acidity of the latter’s proton and promotes addition of the nucleophile to the alkene. This insight can be used to design well-defined gold-derived catalysts that follow this mechanism. I will discuss this process and the role of gold as a catalyst in organic chemistry in this presentation.
个人简介
Professor Brian Yates was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology at the University of Tasmania in July 2015.He was an Executive Director (Engineering, Mathematical and Information Sciences) at the Australian Research Council from 2013 to 2015. In this role, Professor Yates helped to develop new initiatives within the ARC to support research excellence in Australia, as well as overseeing grant awarding processes and a major information technology development project.A University of Tasmania alumnus, Professor Yates was Head of Chemistry from 2006-2010 and also had a University-wide role as Deputy Chair of Academic Senate (2011-2012). In 2006 he was honoured with the Carrick National Teaching Award for the Physical Sciences and in 2010 he was awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Individual Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. In 2010-2011 he led a national project with Professor Sue Jones (as ALTC Discipline Scholars in Science) to develop threshold learning outcomes for undergraduate degrees in science.Research:N₂O activation by a vanadium(III) complex.
