报告摘要


Photocatalysisthat utilizes semiconductor nanoparticles is one of the most investigated environmental nanotechnologies. It is a promising technology for air purification because it can decompose gaseous pollutants (particularly volatile organic compounds (VOCs)) directly into harmless CO2 and H2O under ambient conditions. Photocatalysis can be particularly suitable for removing low concentration pollutants (sub-ppm levels) in indoor environments where the conventional adsorption technologies are not very efficient. The maincritical issues in this technology development include: (1) increasing visible light activity to utilize ambient light and (2) preventing catalyst deactivation that hinders long-term usage of photocatalysts. Some research examples on the photocatalytic air cleaning are introduced and discussed. The photocatalyst deactivation processes are discussed according to the kind of air pollutants and the development of deactivation-resistant photocatalysts and their applications to air purification are also introduced and discussed. TiO2 nanotubes (TNT) facilitate the diffusion of dioxygen to the active sites andexhibit a higher durability compared to TiO2 nanoparticles filmduring the photocatalytic degradation of gaseous pollutants. We synthesized{001} facet-exposed TiO2 nanotubes and tested their photocatalytic degradation activity and durability for the degradation of gaseous toluene. The photocatalytic degradation activity and durability of 001-facet TNT was much higher than those of bare TNT.



报告人简介


Wonyong Choi (최원용교수)  教授

 

Prof. Choi graduated from Seoul National University in1988, and received his M.S. from Pohang University of Science and Technology(POSTECH), Pohang, Korea in 1990, Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology(CALTECH), U.S.A. in 1996. Then he became postdoctoral scholar in Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in NASA/Caltech studying “laboratory kineticstudies of heterogeneous atmospheric chemical reactions” from 1996-1998. From1998, he moved to Pohang University of Science and Technology, Division of Environmental Science and Engineering/Dept. of Chemical Engineering andpromoted as a full professor. Now, he is Namgo (Jong-Ryul Lee) Chair Professor in Pohang University of Science and Technology. His research areas cover semiconductor photocatalysis for environmental and energy applications; solar hydrogen production; development of visible light active photocatalysts; advanced oxidation processes (AOPs); developments of physicochemical methods for the destruction of recalcitrant pollutants; environmental photochemistry and ice chemistry. He has published more than 310 research articles in many important international journals with total citation >41,000 times, H-index 87 (Web ofScience, 2020/7), Google citation >54,000, H-index 97 (2020/7). Under his supervision, about 25 Ph.D. and 29 M.S. degrees students have graduated from POSTECH(1998–present), He is also the editor-in-chief of ACS ES&T Engineering(2020.1-present), associate editor of Environ. Sci. Technol. (2017.4–2019.12); editor of J. Hazardous Materials (2008.2–2017.3), editorial board of Nature Sustainability (2020.7-), Energy Environ. Sci. (2008.5– ), ACS Earth & Space Chemistry (2017.3– ), Environ. Sci. Technol. (2015.2–2017.3), J. Phys.Chem. (2009.1–2011.12). He got many Awards and Honors, including 2019 Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate Analytics), 2018 Korea Engineering Award, 2015 KAST Science and Technology Award, 2014 Elected as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), 2014 Elected as Fellow of Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), 2012 Namgo (Jong-Ryul Lee) Chair Professor, POSTECH, 2008 Lectureship Award for Asian and Oceanian Photochemist (Japanese Photochemistry Association), 2006 Young Scientist Award (Korean Academy of Science & Technology; Ministry of Science & Technology), 1988 Alumni Association President Awardfor Outstanding Engineering Students (SNU Engineering College), Academic Achievements and Services, etc.
