报告摘要

Recently, higher-order topological phases have received tremendous attention. Since disorder is ubiquitous, it is interesting to ask whether disorder can induce a quadrupole topological insulator (a higher-order topological phase with quadrupole moments) from a topologically trivial phase. In this talk, I will discuss the disorder effects in a two-dimensional system with chiral symmetry. First, I will prove that chiral symmetry can protect the quantization of the quadrupole moment in a 2D system and then show that disorder can indeed induce a quadrupole topological insulating phase from a topologically trivial phase explained by the self-consistent Born approximation theory. The topological properties manifest in a topological invariant defined based on effective boundary Hamiltonians, the quadrupole moment and zero-energy corner modes. I will also discuss the peculiar localization properties that the states at zero energy become multifractal in the Griffiths regime.


报告人简介



Yong Xu received his B.S. degree from Lanzhou University in 2005 and PhD degree from Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science in 2013. In 2017, he joined the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences at Tsinghua University, after his postdoc training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His research interests broadly encompass topological condensed matter physics and cold atoms. His mainly research contribution includes theoretical prediction of structured (type-II) Weyl fermions, Weyl exceptional rings and the study of  disorder effects on topological phases.
