The Southern Ocean is widely recognized as a potential cause of the lower atmospheric concentration of CO₂ during the late Pleistocene ice ages, but the mechanism is debated. Previous studies have suggested that during ice ages, surface-deep exchange was somehow weakened in the Southern Ocean’s Antarctic Zone, which reduced the leakage of deeply stored CO₂ and thus contributed to the lower glacial CO₂ levels. In this talk, I will review the nitrogen isotope data from different zones of the Southern Ocean. The data favor a weakening and/or equatorward shift in the upwelling associated with the westerly winds as the explanation for the glacial isolation of Antarctic surface. Furthermore, high resolution records from the Indian sector of the Antarctic Zone reveal three modes of change in Southern Westerly Wind-driven upwelling, each affecting atmospheric CO₂. The third mode arising from the meridional temperature gradient as affected by Earth’s obliquity can explain the lag of CO₂ behind climate during glacialinception and deglaciation.
