Compatible braidings, topological orders, and TQFTs in higher dimensions

Braiding statistics among topological excitations can be used to characterize topological orders. A natual language of braiding statistics is Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT). In this talk, I will discuss braiding statistics in 3+1 dimensions. We introduce three classes of "root braidings" and discuss in what sense their combinations lead to legitimate topological orders. Such "compatibility" among different braiding processes is essentially related to gauge invariance of TQFTs. By counting sets of compatible braidings, we end up with all topological orders with a given gauge group, some of which are beyond Dijkgraaf-Witten models. If time is allowed, I will also introduce results in 4+1D.

In 2007, Peng Ye obtained B.S. in Physics in Sun Yat-sen University. In 2012, he obtained PhD in Physics in the Institute for Advanced Study, Tsinghua University. From 2012 to 2015, he work as a postdoctoral researcher in the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Canada. From 2015 to 2018, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate (Gordon & Betty Moore Fellow) in the Department of Physics in University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, U.S.A.. In 2018, he moved back to School of Physics of Sun Yat-sen University as a professor of physics, and is currently leading a research group of condensed-matter theory, especially focusing on strongly-correlated topological phases of matter.
