报告摘要


Quantum many-body systems at zero temperature can exhibit a rich variety of topological phenomena, which have been relatively well understood in gapped systems. In this talk I will discuss symmetry-enriched topological phenomena at quantum critical points in one-dimensional systems with emergent conformal invariance. Using an algebraic framework of (1+1)d conformal field theories (CFT), I will describe how the bulk-boundary correspondence between (1+1)d CFTs and doubled topological phases in (2+1)d can be utilized to compute the quantum anomalies of global symmetry. Next I will discuss topological edge modes of symmetry-enriched CFTs. Their stability against coupling to the gapless bulk can be viewed as generalizations of the celebrated Kondo problem. I will present sufficient conditions for screening of topological edge modes by the CFT, and discuss an interesting example in spin-1 chains.


报告人介绍

Meng Cheng is an Assistant Professor of Physics at Yale University. He received his undergraduate degree from Nanjing University. In 2013, and obtained Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he studied topological superconductivity and its applications in quantum information processing. He then moved to a postdoctoral researcher position in Microsoft Research, Station Q in Santa Barbara, during which he investigated the interplay of global symmetry and topological quantum order. He joined the Department of Physics at Yale University in 2016.
