报告人介绍

Professor Kersti Börjars is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Oxford, as well as a Master of St Catherine’s College. She has degrees from Uppsala University, the University of Leiden (Doctorandus), and a PhD from the University of Manchester. She was the President of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain from 2005 until 2011. Professor Börjars is currently a member of the RAE 2008 panel 58 for linguistics, Chair of sub-panel 28 ‘Modern languages and linguistics’ of REF2014, and is the editor of the Journal of Linguistics. Since January 2017, she is also Professor II in Nordic Languages at The University of Oslo. Her research interests are in language change; why and how it happens. Professor Börjars has worked on Germanic languages, especially the Scandinavian ones, but has also looked at change over time from a broader perspective. She is also interested in how models of grammar can help us understand change, and in this respect, she works particularly within Lexical-Functional Grammar.

报告摘要

One of the few strong generalisations we can make about language is that if a language is used, it will change. If a person who understands the English spoken now looks at a document written in English, say, 1000 years ago, they will not understand much. They may not even recognise it as English. Still there has been no day in the intervening period when speakers could not understand the language used the day before, or even a year or ten earlier. We will look at some examples of language change and try to understand a little better how and why it happens.
