报告人介绍

Graham is a Professor of Chemical Geology at University College London (UCL). He is currently the chief editor of the Journal of the Geological Society and chair of the society's Earth System Science group. He has received personal fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Leverhulme Foundation. As chair of the ICS working group for the chronostratigraphic subdivision of the pre-Cryogenian timescale, Graham most recently proposed an improved rock-based timescale (http://jgs.lyellcollection.org/content/179/1/jgs 2020-222.abstract), which is currently under discussion. He has applied a range of geochemical techniques to the study of Proterozoic and Phanerozoic paleo-environments, pioneering the use of rare earth elements and trace sulfate isotopes. More recently, he has turned his attention to the workings of the long-term carbon cycle, particularly the disruptive role of the predictable imbalance between pyrite weathering and deposition rates. 


报告摘要

The C-S biogeochemical cycles are intimately related, and the imbalance between pyrite/organic carbon weathering and deposition rates essentially controls the deoxygenation and oxygenation of the Earth's surface environment. Carbon isotope excursions, both positive and negative, are proposed to be the 'smoking gun' of such imbalance. In this talk, Graham will trace the evolution of the Proterozoic sulfur cycle against the background of major tectonic events and the carbon cycle.
