The Year of the Dog

The Chinese zodiac, also called the “Twelve Zodiac”, refers to the twelve animals that Chinese people traditionally used to calculate people’s ages. They are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. In China, everyone is born in a year with an animal assigned to that year. For example, a person born in the Year of the Monkey would be a Monkey.

Each animal in the zodiac has its unique traits in traditional Chinese culture.

Rats are timid and suspicious, and people often use “as timid as a rat” to describe a timid man.

the Rat

Oxen are mainly used for farming, so Chinese people have deep feelings towards them, regarding them as industrious animals that do not ask for anything in return.

Mighty and brave tigers were thought to be the patron of children, so in old times children often wore tiger hats and tiger-headed shoes.

Rabbits are often clever characters in traditional Chinese stories. Now people often use “move as a rabbit” to describe a person who is as agile as a running rabbit.

Dragons are imaginary creatures. As an icon of physical and spiritual strength, the dragon has always been much loved by Chinese people. “Hoping my son will become a dragon” expresses the wish of parents for their children to achieve a big success in life, and to be as outstanding as a dragon.

Snakes often appear in negative images, and are often used to describe vicious people.

Horses are regarded by the Chinese people as loyal, hardworking and intelligent, and people use “achieving success when the horse arrives” to describe an immediate victory.

the Horse

Sheep are considered gentle and kind, and “scapegoat” describes someone who is blamed for faults of others.

Monkeys are clever and naughty. The Monkey King in the Chinese classic Journey to the West is a typical image of the monkey.

In addition, punctuality of the rooster and loyalty of the dog are well-recognised. A chubby pig is a symbol of blessings.

You might be curious as to why there is no cat in the zodiac.

It is said that there were no cats in ancient China. The Chinese zodiac had been created before cats were introduced to China.
