Emma

To tap into (利用,开发)a growing market for electric vehicles in China, Tesla is betting big on(对...

CEO Elon Musk emphasized his aims to get the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory(特斯拉上海超级工厂) up-and-running (投产) this year, and to deliver(交付) U.S-made Model 3 sedans(轿车) to customers in China immediately.

Electric vehicle sales have grown more rapidly in China than other parts of the world. The growth is thanks, in part, to an array of incentives (一系列激励机制) for electric vehicle makers, and subsidies (补贴)  for people who buy these cars in China.

Tesla wants to establish a strong foothold(站稳脚跟,立足,很地道的表达法哦) in this massive market, before the subsidies and incentives go away ( 消失,这里指补贴政策取消 ).

Tesla faces serious competition from domestic Chinese companies like: the Warren Buffet-backed BYD(back这里作动词,表示支持,这里指得到巴菲特投资的比亚迪公司); SAIC(上汽集团), which makes Roewe electric cars; and Geely, the parent company of Volvo(沃尔沃的母公司吉利).

It also faces competition from foreign automakers(汽车制造商) that produce electric cars or hybrid, and already know their way around (表示做某事或是在某个领域已经驾轻就熟,老司机)manufacturing in China, like Ford, Hyundai and Toyota.

Here are some of Tesla’s biggest plans for China that executives(高管们) outlined during Wednesday’s fourth-quarter earnings call ( 第四季度财报电话会议 ).

“The purchase of the land is a 50-year lease  ( 50年租约 ) with the government of China. So, it’s not capex(capital expenditure的缩写,指资本支出). However, the capex that we will invest is our equipment, and we fully own it. ”

“The plan is still to get funding for the majority of that capital spending from local China banks. And we expect very attractive rates(指很低的利率,attractive price/rates 一般都表示价格低).”

“If you’re in the automotive industry you will understand how significant this is, but maybe it’s not as obvious to everyone. Tesla has the first wholly owned manufacturing facility in China of any automotive company(特斯拉是第一个在中国拥有全资制造工厂的车企). So, this is profound (意义重大).”

“We need to bring the Shanghai factory online. Our car is just very expensive going into China. We’ve got import duties (进口税), we’ve got transport costs(运输成本), we’ve got higher costs of labor (劳动力成本) here. And we’ve never been eligible for any of the EV tax credits(有资格享受电动车税收减免).”

“So once a car is made in Shanghai, it is eligible for tax credits which are going to be reducing in China in the coming years. ”

“The demand for Model 3 is insanely high (高得不得了,美式口语中经常出现insane来表示真是疯了,超乎想象). The problem is affordability ( 指价格能否承受 ). If we made it more affordable, the demand is extraordinary.”
