Do you know how Shenzhen turns our trash into energy?
I would say ‘I have no idea’, however, since I took a short trip to waste-to-energy power plant last Monday morning I can say ‘Yes, of course’.
南山国际化交流中心特地邀请了来自贝赛思国际学校、蛇口国际学校等多组国际志愿者亲子家庭一同探秘南山垃圾焚烧发电厂。

Before the event started, people just curious about almost everything about the waste-to-energy power plant:
What does it looks like?
Will it release harmful gas into the air?
How much garbage does it process every day?
…
Fortunately, most of the questions were answered during the visit.
After a 15-minute bus drive, we arrived.
Firstly, Mr. Xu, the engineer from Shenzhen Energy Protection Company, showed us around the display board for some basic knowledge of waste classification.
深能环保的徐工早早等待着大家的到来，带领我们感受这场神奇之旅！他先带领我们在一楼进行垃圾分类以及垃圾发电厂运作原理的讲解，中心的涉外社工们在一旁同步翻译讲解。
当大家了解到深圳每天都要产生超过两万吨的垃圾，超过一半的垃圾只能直接进行填埋处理时，都表示十分震惊。
Mr. Xu introduced that all the waste processed here for power won’t release any harmful gas.
当介绍垃圾发电厂运作原理的时候，由于不少人都是第一次见到，大家都担忧这会造成二次污染。徐工则介绍道，这里用的是世界一流水平的清洁焚烧工艺，所以最终的排放物是无毒无害的。

Next comes the most exciting part. I guess everyone enjoys catching dolls in the claw machine as a kid, but I bet you’d never seen such a big CLAW before!
一进入六楼的垃圾吊控制室，大家都被硕大的垃圾吊震惊了。

The operator introduced that the trash pool was 24 m high, 48 m wide and 60 m long, which can hold up to 10,000 tons of garbage. And about 900 tons of garbage will be transported here every day. The trash has to stay in the pool for 3-5 days to drain the water before generating energy.
这个垃圾池足足有24米深，48米宽，60米长，每天都有约900吨的垃圾运往这里。旁边的二期工程预计处理量是一期的两倍，虽然还没有正式投入运营，但是也已经在工作了。虽然面对着垃圾池，但是却闻不到丝毫的臭味。
The operator also told us that almost half of the trash Shenzhen produces every day goes to the waste-to-energy power plant.

Finally, we went to the control room, where things like temperature, weight for trash burning can be controlled. The real-time status for trash burning was displayed on screen.
最后一站是可以控制垃圾焚烧质量和实时监控焚烧温度的总控制室。

Volunteers said...
It was very meaningful for both kids and adults.
‘Before that, I didn’t know how Shenzhen deal with the garbage despite landfilling. Shenzhen has done a great job on waste and I would definitely follow up the latest news of waste treatment in Shenzhen.
也有外籍志愿者在参观当中分享了很多在他们国家关于垃圾分类的一些值得借鉴的做法；其他志愿者则表示以后会继续关注深圳在垃圾分类上的最新动态。
We should popularize the waste classification to next generation and that’s why we bring my kids here. And my kids benefit a lot from it.
许多家庭觉得垃圾分类需要从孩子开始普及，让他们从小就养成垃圾分类的意识和习惯，今天有机会带着孩子一起来现场上一堂生动的普及课远比从书上看到的有教育意义。
