The Postdoctoral Fellowship

Peking University (PKU) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) have launched the PKU-IIASA International Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, aimed at training highly qualified early-career postdoctoral researchers to carry out research in fields of mutual interest at both PKU and IIASA. The fellow will register and conduct research at PKU for 12 months and at IIASA for 12 months with multiple exchange visits between PKU and IIASA.

Under this framework, each applicant must identify at least one faculty member from each institution who agrees to serve as his/her host supervisor. In this regard, the Watershed Science Laboratory (PKUWSL), Laboratory of Energy & Environmental Economics and Policy (LEEEP) at College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (CESE) of PKU and Water Program (WAT) at IIASA invite applications to contact us as host supervisors. 

The fellow will work with an international and interdisciplinary panel of scholars: Prof. Yong Liu (PKUWSL), Prof. Hancheng Dai (LEEEP) and Dr. Yoshihide Wada (WAT). We invite the applicants to contact us to develop a research proposal with the focus on energy-water nexus under the global climate change mitigation policies, including: a) Assessing the impacts of energy decarbonization strategies on water demand or water quality; b) Assessing the impacts of climate change on water resource availability; and c) assessing the synergies and trade-offs of climate change mitigation on water resource or water quality stress taking into account both demand and supply sides of water resource or wastewater discharging.

Qualifications

Applicants that contact us for the energy-water nexus study should have completed their Ph.D. requirements by the start date, but applicants close to completion will also be considered. We seek applicants with research experience on energy/climate issues, and strong analytical skills in integrated assessment modeling, water resource modeling, and/or computable general equilibrium modeling. Proficiency in English is required.

Compensation:

An annual compensation of 336,000 RMB (50,000 USD) will be provided, including pre-tax salary of 185,000 RMB (27,500 USD), annual insurances of 91,000 RMB (13,500 USD), and a monthly subsidy of 5,000 RMB (744 USD) if the fellow finds his/her own accommodation rather than living in PKU postdoctoral flat. Note that the accommodation subsidy will not be available if the fellow lives in PKU postdoctoral flat, and while at IIASA, a fellow will be required to find their own accommodation but will also receive an accommodation subsidy of 3,500 RMB per month (the equivalent in Euro).

3. Two recommendation letters (directly send by referees to the coordinators, including one from the applicant’s doctoral supervisor)

4. An endorsement letter or e-mail from each of the envisaged postdoctoral supervisors at PKU and IIASA. The letter or e-mail should include detailed information on the added value of the research project and a clear statement of commitment regarding the physical and intellectual research environment that the supervisor will provide to the fellow.
