Pantang Wuyue and Participatory Design

Pantang Wuyue is the only vernacular settlement in Guangzhou's historic district that has retained its Ming and Qing Dynasty patterns. The previous renovation was mostly based on large-scale demolition and construction. The company intervened in the project as a "micro-renovation" community planner, constantly exploring the application of participatory design in historic districts, expanding the focus from single-house repair to co-creation with community residents in the context of historical and cultural preservation and social innovation, to achieve historical and cultural preservation, spatial revitalisation, knowledge dissemination and education, and social service innovation. In this way, the project achieves the practical goals of historical and cultural preservation, spatial revitalisation, knowledge dissemination and education, and social service innovation.

Warm Ancient Town

The renovation of Songkou Town in Yongtai, Fuzhou began in 2014, and over the years this thousand-year-old town surrounded by Dazhang River has not stopped revitalising its way forward. Many young people from Songkou who were in other cities began to join the team of returnees to settle down in their hometowns and participate in the revitalisation. Letting local people do local things and rebuild confidence in living locally has always been a crucial part of determining the vitality of rural revitalisation, and HOMELAND, as a local Fujian magazine, has been involved in the process, accompanying them as they slowly change and grow along with the ancient town. this time, we will look back on Songkou's past 10 years and share some of the recent attempts to revitalise the town in the local context.

 Workshop

On Thursday, November 30th from 10:00 to 13:00, also the last day of the "Urban Regeneration Festival", we will end with a more interactive workshop.

We'll engage professionals, practitioners, scholars, and citizens in a collaborative reflection about temporary uses in China and their role in the deveopment of the urban spaces.

Participants reflects on the characteristic of community engagement projects and cases of temporary uses; they discuss across the cases from Europe and China, confronting strategies, challenges, and solutions. T-factor is developing a portfolio of innovation aiming to share with cities the methods and tools that make possible to activate the regeneration of the unused spaces throughout temporary uses (the toolkit is accessible at https://hub.t-factor.eu/), and n the workshop we will explore how the toolkit could support the creation of temporary uses inspired by the global challenges and in respect of the local unique characteristics.
