A recent report shows that in Japan, more consumers are choosing good-for-me, good-for-earth foods, due to increased environmental concerns, animal welfare, and for their own health. Out of this conscious population that chooses to eat less meat, only 20% of them are choosing to eat meat substitutes, preferring to eat vegetables than meatlike alternatives.

1. Currently, 7% of total Japanese consumers, have never eaten meat and 32% only eat meat sometimes.
2. The main reason for this is health with 56% associating eating less meat with being healthier 46% are doing so due to concerns over animal welfare.

Of the consumers who still eat meat on a regular basis, 18% have made efforts to reduce meat intake. The main reason these consumers are looking to reduce meat is an environmental concern. Growing awareness about the connection between animal agriculture and climate change has led to many consumers becoming flexitarian (32%).

There are a number of reasons why many consumers in Japan avoid Plant-Based Meat. According to the research and survey did by the group mentioned before:
1. 40% felt that meat alternatives do not make them feel full
2. 35% said there is a lack of flavour and variety
3. 33% prefer to eat vegetables over meat replacements.
4. When it comes to flavors, mushroom and tofu are the top two preferred flavours and meatlike flavours are not preferred by many.
来自水果、蔬菜和植物的天然色素是首选。
Natural Colouring from fruits, vegetables, and plants is preferred.

It seems like a lot of the Japanese consumers prefer Vegetables over Plant-Based Meat. It is not surprising if a consumer was eating mostly a whole foods diet and wants to reduce meat, they would opt for more fresh vegetables, beans, whole grains, fruits than Processed Plant-Based Meat.
