I bought a jasmine(茉莉) plant for my office. When I bought it, I was told it would bloom(开花) and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and every day I looked at it, but there weren’t any flowers or pleasant smell. I was not happy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda.

One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn’t help smelling them. Surrounded(包围) by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something.

Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom. Regretfully, I gave it away.

In a way my life is like the jasmine plant. I need to be patient and let things happen.

Last Sunday Linda told me that she was going abroad the next week. Before she left, she returned the plant to me. This time I am going to wait. I have learned that when we want something in our life, we have to be patient. I am slowly learning to have that patience to wait for my jasmine to bloom.

49. When the writer saw Mary’s jasmine, she felt       .

A. unhappy               B. peaceful                     C. hopeful                  D. surprised

50. What does the underlined word “Regretfully” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. Patience is needed in life.                     B. Flowers can make life better.

C. Friendship is necessary for us.                     D. Jasmine can be a wonderful plant.

C

It’s not easy growing up. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel sad, sometimes we are afraid, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. But we should take a look back on all the hard periods in life with a positive attitude(积极的态度) and learn from them. We should realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!

Throughout our lives we are going to face many challenges and pains, but we should never let these obstacles keep us from following our dreams. We must overcome every obstacle one small step at a time.

As a young girl, my parents forced me to do so many things that I didn’t like. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music and I also hated them. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched(丰富) my life in so many ways. I now realize that my parents and teachers wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.

We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just part of our life. Think about how we would feel if we had no challenges and lived a life like that. Life would be really boring and meaningless. The future is ours! A little hard work and sweat(汗水) never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps(碰撞) on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!

52. When we take a look back on all the hard periods in life, we should       .

A. get afraid of them                                          B. pay no attention to them

C. learn from them                                           D. feel sad about them

53. The underlined word “obstacles in Paragraph 2 means the things that       .

C. make you happy                                      D. make you full of energy

54. What does the writer now think about what her parents did for her in the past?

A. She is angry with them.                             B. She is unhappy with them.

C. She thanks them very much.                      D. She can’t believe them.

55. What would be the best title for this passage?

A. No Pains, No Gains                                   B. Growing Pains and Gains

C. Growing up is a Pain                                    D. Growing up is Easy

Several days ago, I was walking home from school and saw some writing on the fence of a house I was passing by. It said, “Happiness is a direction, not a destination(终点).” I had been having a bad day and just reading this brightened my day a little. I also took out a pen and wrote one of my favorite quotes(格言) down.

When I came back to the fence, I saw another quote under mine in the handwriting as the first one. I added another, and we kept at this pattern for quite a while. One day, I was writing another quote on the fence and the old man, one of my neighbors, who owned the fence, saw me. He came out and I was afraid he would be mad at me for writing on his fence; he was not known to be very friendly. He gave me a sharp glance and then read the quotes on the fence. Without saying a word, he said something to himself and then went back inside. I was a bit terrified for a while, afraid to go back to the fence, but when I did, I noticed not more quotes but two words in entirely different handwriting had been added, “Thank you.”

Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He beckoned(召唤) me over and told me how my quotes had been inspiring him, how he thanked me and how he was glad to see young people still have “values”. We are now good friends and I talk to him a lot. This experience has changed my life. I still don’t know who wrote that very first quote, but if he is out there, I’d like to say “thanks” to that unknown friend.

56. How did the writer feel before he saw the words on the fence?

A. Excited.              B. Nervous.                     C. Unhappy.                     D. Relaxed.

57. Why did the writer begin to write a quote on the fence?

A. He got some help from the quote.

B. He wanted to practice his handwriting.

C. He thought doing this was interesting.

D. He wanted to catch his neighbor’s attention.

58. Why was the writer afraid when he found that his neighbor had seen him?

A. He thought that the old man was a mad person.

B. He was once told the old man was cold-hearted.

C. He thought the old man would tell his parents about his action.

D. He thought the old man would be angry with him for what he had done.

59. Who do you think most probably added “Thank you” to the fence?

A. The old man.                                   B. Someone else.

C. The writer himself.                            D. That unknown friend.

60. What can we learn about the old man?

A. He was the writer’s new neighbor.

B. He was known for his friendliness.

C. He knew who first wrote the words on his fence.

D. He has changed his opinion about young people.

How are a peach basket and a basketball hoop alike? Read the story. You will find out.

A long time ago, there was a gym teacher named Mr. Naismith. He had a hard time keeping his class busy. His students were bored. They talked loudly. They didn’t like to stay inside in winter. Mr. Naismith tried to think of a way to keep his class busy.

Mr. Naismith had an idea. He asked someone at the school to find two boxes. No boxes could be found. Mr. Naismith got two peach baskets. He put the peach baskets high above the gym floor. One basket was at one end of the gym. The other basket was at the other end.

Mr. Naismith had a surprise for his students the next day. They saw the peach basket. They thought that was funny. Mr. Naismith told them the rules of this new game. There would be two teams. Each team would try to throw a ball into a peach basket. The teams would not play against each other. They would just try to get a ball into their own basket.

There was one main rule. When a player had the ball, he had to pass it to another player. The player who got the ball would throw it into the basket. The students had a hard time passing the ball. Everyone wanted to keep the ball. They wanted to throw it in the basket.

The players could not push each other. They also could not hit. If they did, Mr. Naismith would blow his whistle and that team would get a foul(犯规). After three fouls, the other team would get a point.

When a player threw the ball into the basket, it stayed there! There were no holes in the bottoms of the peach baskets. Mr. Naismith had to climb a ladder to get the ball out of the basket. Then the players could shoot the ball again. It was a slow game.

Mr. Naismith thought of some changes. He cut out the bottoms of the baskets. That way Mr. Naismith wouldn’t have to climb a ladder to get a ball. The rules of the game changed too. The teams started to play against each other. Then players could bounce the ball. After a while, peach baskets were changed to hoops and nets. The game of basketball was invented.

Nick is now a Grade 9 student this year. But he isn’t in good mood these days, and he doesn’t know who he could share his worries with. He can’t do well in sports because he is overweight. He stays up late almost every day to finish his homework. As a result, he feels sleepy in the daytime. Although he studies hard, he still can’t get high marks. He is always laughed at by his classmates. He feels lonely and so helpless.

He doesn’t need to pay attention to those who laugh at him. I think he could ask his teachers or close friends for advice. He should try his best to study and believe in himself, and everything will go better.
