I'm Helen Blevins. I'm very lucky because I make money by doing what I love—painting pictures.
I painted my first picture when I was just four. One day, when Mom was cooking, I painted a summer scene(场景) on one blue wall of my bedroom. I painted myself and my dog on the grass, with red flowers around. I painted the sun above us, with a big smile on its face.
I was still painting when Mom walked into my room. Her mouth was open and she stood there quietly, looking at the wall. “I'm in big trouble, ” I thought. So I was really surprised when Mom said, “What a beautiful picture, Helen！” The picture stayed on my bedroom wall and is still there today, 30 years later. I see it every time I go home to visit Mom.
I tell this story because it shows how much Mom supported my love of painting. When I was in school, she cared about my art as much as other subjects. She kept all my paintings and hung many of them on the walls of our house. She often said, “You are so talented. Follow your dream. ”
Today I'm a successful painter. I'm happy that people love my paintings and hang them in their homes. However, I will never forget Mom's great support!

Ancient China produced many types of beautiful works of art. Among them, calligraphy(书法), poetry(诗歌) and painting were the most famous. Often they would be put together in art. These became important starting with the Song Dynasty.
Calligraphy is the art of handwriting. In the old time, the Chinese considered writing as an important form of art. Calligraphers would practice for years to learn to write perfectly, but with style. Poetry was also an important form of art. Great poets were famous all over the country, but all educated people were expected to write poetry. During the Tang Dynasty, poetry was so important that writing poetry was part of the examinations to become a civil servant(文官) and work for the government.
Chinese painting was often connected with calligraphy. It is one of the oldest artistic traditions in the world. The most traditional way of Chinese painting is known as “national” or “native” painting(国画), which is quite different from Western painting. People can draw mountains, homes, birds, trees and water on it.
