TESOL Quarterly (TQ) is seeking proposals from prospective guest editors for the 2024 special topic issue. Proposals are chosen by the TQ Editorial Advisory Board, and the guest editor(s) are responsible for overseeing the review process and selecting the content of the issue. The issue will appear in September 2024. Successful proposals have an overarching theme that is timely and interesting to the TQ readership.

Call for Papers for a Special Issue

Internationalisation has been a strategic vehicle to transform higher education and become a prominent trend in universities across the world in the past decades. Internationalisation of higher education is drawing growing attention from the broader community outside the education sector, especially as its rationales, operations and impacts increasingly align with economic, social and political interests. It is increasingly subject to public policy turbulences related to migration, workforce, post-study work rights and economics. Internationalisation of higher education has been affected by development of digital technologies and both local and global online e-learning markets. Internationalisation of higher education has at the same time encountered heightened insecurity and been vulnerable to pandemic, financial, geopolitical crises and natural disasters. These merging challenges have led to changes and variations in policy frameworks, institutional operations and individual practices in internationalisation of higher education. These issues have significant implications for the quality, recovery, sustainability, and ethical development of international education.

This Special Issue focuses on the changes occurring in internationalisation of higher education through: (i) whether and in what ways institutions have shifted the focus, strategy and operations of internationalisation since COVID-19 (e.g. internationalisation abroad versus internationalisation at home, transnational education partnerships, inbound and outbound mobilities, transnational research collaboration etc) (ii) digitalisation of international higher education (including online/blended internationalised programs and virtual mobility programs); (iii) the impacts of geopolitical turbulences and concerns about security on internationalisation of research, curriculum, transnational partnerships and education as well as inbound and outbound mobilities; (iv) how internationalisation of higher education has been shaped and reshaped by economic, social and political policy frameworks; and (v) new developments in internationalisation of higher education.

Contributions, especially from under-represented regions, are invited for this Special Issue which explores emerging epistemologies, developments, insights and sources of evidence for re-conceptualising internationalisation of higher education in the changing context.
