Nanjing, capital city of East China's Jiangsu Province, Wednesday announced that it would launch a citywide nucleic acid testing for COVID-19 after 17 airport workers tested positive for COVID-19 .

Nanjing Lukou International Airport started emergency testing for more than 15,000 staff members on Tuesday night. No positive results have been found as of press time but the test is still ongoing, according to Nanjing government officials at a press conference on Wednesday noon.

Jiangning district where the airport is located also launched mass testing at 9 am.

Four residential communities and villages near the airport were raised to medium-level risk areas. The epidemic-affected streets close to the airport have been sealed off. Nearly 98,000 people living in the street have been tested.

Nanjing authorities said on Tuesday night that nine staff members at the airport tested positive for COVID-19. According to a government statement early on Wednesday, all nine cases are cleaning staff members at the airport, which were found during a regular nucleic acid test.

The number of positive cases detected was later updated to 17, said a Hu Wanjin, vice mayor of Nanjing at the press conference on Wednesday noon.

Among the 17, nine are confirmed cases and five are asymptomatic patients. The other three positive cases still need further diagnosis, he said.

Other 157 close contacts of the patients were also found during the investigation.

The airport announced on Tuesday night that all passengers must have a certificate with negative nucleic acid test results within 48 hours before departure from Nanjing. It would also strengthen temperature checks and health code inspection for people entering the airport.
