PISA is the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment. It measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges and also includes measures of general or cross-curricular competencies, such as collaborative problem solving. It has become the biggest and most influential assessment program for international education in the world.

Recently, OECD released the full results of PISA 2018. There were 600,000 students representing about 32 million 15-year-olds from 79 countries and economies participated in the test. Within all three main criteria, Alberta ranked first in all Canada provinces and 3rd in Reading, 4th in Science, 9th in Math in the WORLD.

In the past 19 years, all provinces in Canada have participated in ALL seven of the PISA tests. Among all provinces, Alberta students have consistently finished first in Canada and finished in the top 10 in each subject in the world in all seven PISA tests.

How is PISA affecting education

Whilst PISA reflects student performance in reading, science and math, it's considered more a test for the education system of a country or economy. The PISA results are used at international level with an increasing impact in education decisions.

The test itself reflects educational revolution in a certain way. Criticism is mostly about it neglecting other areas of education which are equally important such as reading, math and science. Since PISA 2018, global skills have been added in the testing framework to navigate education towards globalization. And PISA 2021 will have an additional test in creative thinking to include art and emphasize the importance in creative problem solving in an ever-changing world.
