The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is an internationally recognized curriculum that offers 11th and 12th grade students an opportunity to earn the IB diploma. The program is offered in over 800 public and private secondary schools around the world.

国际文凭课程(IB)是国际公认的11-12年级文凭课程。全世界有800多所公立和私立中学提供IB课程。

The IB Program is governed by the IB Organization in Geneva, Switzerland and administered by the International Baccalaureate Curriculum and Assessment Center in Cardiff, Wales. The organization originated over thirty years ago in Europe as an effort by international schools to assure quality educational standards for students, regardless of where they lived. Today, the organization uses the talents of educators around the world to continuously update curriculum, train teachers, assess student work, and evaluate the program.

Graduation requirements

Alberta: The Alberta High School Diploma requires students to finish high school with 100 credits and pass all diploma tests. Credit courses include not only core subjects but also career and life management, technology, fine arts, PE and other extended courses.

IB: To earn the IB diploma, students complete and test in six IB subjects; write an extended essay of independent research guided by a faculty mentor, complete 150 hours of creative, action, and service activities (CAS); and participate in a critical thinking course called Theory of Knowledge. Students who take IB courses without completing the entire program may earn IB certificates by testing in selected IB courses.

The Alberta curriculum emphasizes more on a broad liberal arts education with opportunities for excellence in the arts, athletics, leadership and community service. Compared with IB, the Alberta Curriculum has more optional courses that encourage students to pursue their passions.

Teacher accredidations

It is mandatory for the Alberta Curriculum to be taught by Alberta certified teachers who possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s of Education and obtain a minimum amount of time in teaching experience, ensuring high quality instruction of the curriculum. While in IB curriculum, teachers with degrees must gain certificates through official IB training session and renew the qualification every couple of years.

While we acknowledge the merit and value of the IB Diploma, we have not seen evidence that it gives its students an advantage over the Alberta Diploma student. Most post-secondary institutions indicate that for applicants who complete both the International Baccalaureate diploma and Alberta High School Diploma, admission is based on a credential which is to the advantage of the student.
