Orange Shirt Day: A Powerful Message that Every Child Matters

Wearing Orange to Show our Commitment to Change

穿着橙色衬衫 许下改变的承诺

 As part of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day), CIS staff and students have been engaged in inspiring conversations and activities, and learning about the legacies of residential schools on generations of Indigenous peoples across Canada.

In the words of CIS principal Gary Rehman, a professional Canadian educator who has been teaching in and leading schools for 36 years, Orange Shirt Day is more than just a commemoration of the past.

作为加拿大全国真相与和解日（橙色衬衫日）的一部分，CIS的员工和学生加入了一系列鼓舞人心的对话和活动，学习加拿大各地几代原住民寄宿学校留下的故事。

CIS校长Gary Rehman，担任教师和教学领导36年的一名加拿大专业教育工作者，他认为橙色衬衫日不仅仅代表着对过去的纪念。

“The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, commemorates the legacy of the Canadian residential school system. This is also a time for our students, staff, families and community partners to reflect on our responsibility to make meaningful change. By ensuring that our CIS students understand the history of residential schools and the impact they had on language, culture, family, community relationships, safety, identity and sometimes even their lives, we are opening the door to global conversation and empowering our children to become messengers of a story that needs to be told, so that we are ready for a better and more informed future. Each year, CIS focuses on the theme ‘Every Child Matters’, and we wear orange t-shirts to remind us that everyone’s experiences actually matter. This is how we show our commitment to hope, reconciliation and to changing the world, because at CIS, every child truly matters and every child is more than capable of making a difference, no matter who they are or where they come from.”

A residential school survivor digitally talked about his experiences to CIS students from Grade 4 to Grade 12.

Everyone received an orange T-shirt to decorate and wear during the week!

Grade 11s created virtual reality worlds to show the Indigenous cultures and residential school of Canada for all students to experience and explore.

Our guest artist Flora created twin paintings with CIS students and staff.

Special thanks to our special guest Ted, a residential school survivor, who joined us online all the way from Canada to talk about his four-year experience at a residential school. Our students were able to gain valuable first-hand insight and make real-world connections, allowing them to fully understand the impact of Orange Shirt Day.

Our special thanks also goes to Flora Zeng, our Canadian-Chinese artist-in-residence, who generously worked with all our students to create two ‘fingerprint’ paintings (inspired by indigenous Canadian artist Norval Morrisseau). Each bespoke canvas contains the unique DNA of all our students and staff, representing that indeed, every child matters, and that even though our experiences are different, we can all come together as one to create a beautiful future.
