Meta-tation stems from a question regarding our happiness in the 21st century.

For a long time I often thought the meaning of being alive is the ability to connect and find union between other human beings. The ability to confirm your existence though the experience of other bodies. It has recently occurred to me however, that the essence of being human lies not externally but internally, and first requires the union between mind and body.

The search for union between others is only satisfying if it is done when the union within yourself is achieved first.

Life in the 21st century cannot be considered without recognising the inescapable impact of technology. Today we rely on technology for a multitude of aspect in our lives, from entertainment, dating, eating, exercising and getting to know each other, engaging our lives online is a big part of todays human experience. However as much as technology may make our connections faster and more accessible, prolonged use is revealing to have a more negative impact. This is especially true to the nature of being online: recognising yourself as an online user with a customisable profile, interacting with other users who are only identified by a username and existing within this carefully selected world of feeds, memes, images, reels and stories. I believe the physical experience of staying in your own body whilst your mind drifts far into the digital world has the ability to unconsciously detach mind and body.

Therefore I created the term ‘Meta-tation’: How to find union within yourself when surrounded by devices that pull you further away from the ground? How to achieve inner peace when everything around you screams for your attention - offering in return only the shallow comfort of instant gratification?

Meta-tation is a calling for grounding of our mind and body within online platforms.

(VERRE LIQUIDE) is located in the heart of Hangzhou, near Fenghuang Temple, on Baoyouqiao West Road of the Southern Song Imperial Street, it was previously the site of Jinruixing Restaurant, known as the "boisterous gathering place for spirited drinks, with no equal anywhere.” As the new institution under MARTIN GOYA BUSINESS following the multimedia label V33N0, and Janko Ye has been appointed as the representative of the institution. In the future, MARTIN GOYA BUSINESS and 狸瑞金卮 (VERRE LIQUIDE) will continue to engage in international exhibition collaborations and independent projects with artists.

The Chinese name of the space 狸瑞金卮 is pronounced as LÍ Rùi Jīn Zhī, deviates from the conventional naming strategy of art spaces. It is not a person’s name and lacks concreteness; instead, it paints a scene: Drawing from the name of the old restaurant, raising golden cups, there are cats, gathering prosperity and accompanying fantasies, preserving the spirit of the late Southern Song Dynasty.

VERRE LIQUIDE is a French name, with a play on sounds to signify viewing the world through a lens. The vessel resembles a golden cup, containing a marvellous and colourful substance, a non-Newtonian fluid that possesses resilience, flexibility, and elasticity. It also represents MARTIN GOYA BUSINESS’s continued vision of transcending reality and breaking boundaries.

MARTIN GOYA BUSINESS is a mysterious creature born in the Post-Southern Song Dynasty. It is the fantastic illusion of gathering in the dark, a hidden place for cats.MARTIN GOYA is a black cat.
