宏藝新展|一叠半 Ichi-jō han
Ichi-jō han
From Yo-jō han to Ichi-jō han, the Japanese tea master Sen no Rikyu generalizes his concept of beauty as reaching the realm of "subtracting the inessential," without any excess. The works of Yip Man are similar, using blocks of color and simple line elements to transform consciousness into simple objects that display different emotions. Upon first encountering Yip Man's works, one is struck by the way he presents his art in an extremely minimalist yet labor-intensive way. The daily repetition of this labor is both a form of practice and a form of pilgrimage.
"Just boil the water, add the tea leaves, and drink the tea in the appropriate way. That's all you need to know," like Sen no Rikyu's tea ceremony, it is a simple set of actions. The same applies to Yip Man's creations, which delete the tedious steps of painting and leave only pure colors. Even if it takes time, it is "the most appropriate" for Yip Man.
The new series "Another Landscape" presents creations that reflect emotions, states, and psychological activities during specific time periods as the works before. From lines to basic geometric elements, it explores the relationship between elements and space. The creation of the work's spatial relationship is shown through the contrast of light and dark changes in geometric elements, and the interlacing of virtual and real. Some of the works also have color references that mimic printing color correction, which is a very interesting contrast to its colorful works. For space, Yip Man believes that it is like a container without boundaries. When the container is empty, it is a state of emptiness, and when there is something inside, there is a filed with attributes, like placing objects on the canvas creates "another landscape.”
Sen Rikyu has been practicing how to achieve a harmonious state of nature and humanities in only one and a half stacks of space, trying to present all the beauty in such a small space without appearing heavy. It's like watching Zhang Lihua's paintings, and I feel the same lightness. There are many things to say in her paintings, but they are always relaxed and happy. Lihua's paintings are mostly about the old Hakka village where she lives. Even the simplicity is full of surprises, or fishing by the lake, or meeting the landlady's wife enjoying the shade under the tree. Ordinary daily under Lihua's pen with the leisurely atmosphere is like those important things that are invisible to the naked eye. Looking at Lihua's paintings, nature and people have reached a perfect balance, and it seems that you can feel the cool breeze blown by the landlady.
In Zhang Lihua's paintings, many of them record figures, but almost all of them are indistinct shape, occasionally with clearer appearances, but they are also extremely ethereal. When asked about her intention to avoid portraiture, she believes that in her works, "objects, scenes, and people" are all a unified whole, a result of natural choices that merge real and perceived feelings. The blurry form is to avoid giving the viewer a solid definition. German film director Wenders once said, "unlike thinking, human watching does not include their opinions on things. Watching is a non-opinionated behavior. In watching, people can find that non-opinionated attitude towards others, objects, and the world." Through the artist's "watching," viewers can find their own state of mind.
Sen no Rikyu used his life experiences to practice his ideal of beauty, eventually condensing aesthetics in this Ichi-jō han space. Just like an artist who has undergone contemplation, simplification, and returned to the essence, leaving behind only what is truly worth keeping.
