Ambush departs from the relationship between manufactured objects and our conditions of living. Artist Ni Hao creates a new body of works in multi-disciplinary practices including recent sculptures, installation, painting, and video works to underline the interchanging issues among power, violence, and acceleration in the sense of constantly changing geo-political structure on a global scale.

The installation work under the same exhibition title allows the visitors to redeem a stack of fake credit cards from a capsule toy vending machine and shoot them with an injection mechanism, which were previously fixed up by Ni Hao from an old model of ATM. The targets are objects and products in a regular domestic office setting, surrounded by large glass panels which make the scene a literal cage in the museum gallery. In the shooting game, the visitor becomes a sovereign overlooking and against the stage where the visitor always involves. Hi Hao reverses the consequences of labouring, alienation, and consumptions in the theory of Marxism. The excitement and violence generated in the experience seal up the discrepancy and the sense of being lost, in which people are estranged by the labouring and capital world.

Structure Study V is the latest work of an ongoing series called Structure Studies, which are performances and sculptural installations that explore the relationship between sound, sculptures, and histories of violence. In this work, various cheap and mass-produced wind instruments from both the east and the west are heavily manipulated and woven into a large steel structure. The surface of the steel structure is treated with artificial sweat and urine to induce rust that will grow over time. The sound of the sculpture is programmed to be randomized through a series of timers.

About the Artist

Ni Hao was born in 1989 in Hsin Chu City, Taiwan. He received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011 and an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2014. He now lives and works in New York and Hsin Chu. Ni Hao investigates power structure, consumerism, and violence aesthetics in his work by utilizing various mediums such as sculpture and video. His practice constantly provokes political metaphors or personal memories behind seemingly familiar objects. Ni Hao's work has been featured in exhibitions at Rockland Center for the Arts, West Nyack; Boston Center for the Arts, Boston; Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei; New Bedford Art Museum, New Bedford; and the Queens Museum, Queens. His recent exhibitions include Aujourd’hui aura lieu at the Gwangju Biennale Pavilion Project, Gwangju, 2018; Strategic Ambiguity at Peligro Amarillo Gallery, Puerto Rico, 2016-2017; and Light Studies at 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica, 2016. His solo exhibition titled Ambush is currently on view at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. In 2019, he will have two upcoming solo exhibitions in Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, and t293, Rome.
