'Beijing Through Foreigners' Lens': Some of Best Entries (II)

BeijingService 2024-06-21

Bruce Connolly, a British photographer, who came to China in 1987, has recorded the transform of Beijing these years with his camera. Let's follow Bruce's lens to experience the changes of Beijing.

In the 1970s and even the 1990s, Beijing was known as a city of the bicycle. It had the "quietest rush hour in the world" - the gentle sound of bicycles quietly moving along the city's avenues and alleys. Occasionally bicycle bells would be heard.

There were very few cars on the roads then.

So different from today!

This image was in Haidian District 1987.

The iconic bamboo Priam

Simply made, mostly from bamboo. Cheap to buy and were used widely.

This image was in the Forbidden City 1987 during my first visit to China.

I just wanted to photograph it. The grandfather pushing the infant was delighted at the attention and was happy for me to take this photograph.

CCTV HQ from China World Mall 3 outdoor terrace 2017

One of my favourite locations in Beijing. The terrace is very popular with young people wanting a great night out with a spectacular view of modern Beijing.

CBD extension - viewed from Guomao.

The CCTV HQ and supertall China Zun (CITIC Tower) are now iconic symbols of modern Beijing.

It was taken by a CRI cameraman when we were filming at China World 3 - a few years ago, was a great time with them.

The CBD has transformed Beijing's skyline since the mid-2000's.
