"On an ordinary morning, I opened my eyes to find the once-familiar buildings suddenly coming to life, becoming monstrous and menacing. The school office building transformed into a circular prison, streetlights turned into blades, and the underground tunnels opened their gaping maws to devour everything in their path. Expressionless eyes hung high in the sky, like indifferent overseers. The vast city suddenly collapsed into a cramped stage, where anxiety and oppression played out. I, too, could not escape this mutation called 'modernity.' Like Gregor in Kafka's work, my mind and body also underwent varying degrees of transformation. I must flee from here, to a place farther away, where perhaps a cure awaits."
The cold tones and geometric compositions continued in the creations of this period. At the same time, the hidden desires and unrest of humanity, the discipline and gaze of social laws, were symbolically processed in the images, becoming part of the spectacle society. The world is opaque, with high walls blocking the natural landscape, and behind each window lies the temptation of desire and the prying eyes of voyeurism.
'Escape' is a common motif in my works. Under the cold night sky, a traveler arrives here, only to quickly set off toward the distant unknown. He is a reflection of myself, intent on escaping this labyrinthine city, fleeing from the social system of the civilized world that commands him to work diligently, to earn a car and a house. If he does not comply, he will have nothing. But the truth is never so; behind this intoxicating prosperity lies a hidden path, beneath the towering skyscrapers is a narrow gate, and he must go there.
I have been escaping for a long time, not even knowing what I was running from—was it the gazes of others? The feelings and issues I needed to face? The heavy past or the uncertain future? The mundane life or this tumultuous world? But now I understand, what I seek to escape is this void."

章灵杰，1999 年出生于江苏无锡，2021 年本科毕业于中国美术学院，现国美油画系第四工作室研究生在读,曾于2023年9月公派赴维也纳美术学院交流学习。其创作聚焦于欲望理智的对立与现代生活的矛盾。常用一些隐喻性的符号，含蓄的构建起舞台剧般的布景，冰冷梦幻的颜色营造了亦真亦幻的当代都市寓言。通过埋藏在画面中的诸多“彩蛋”和细节的相互呼应，给图像小说般的画面增添了可读性。其作品曾在浙江省展览馆、中国美术学院美术馆、浙江美术馆、上海余德耀美术馆、上海虹庙艺术中心,维也纳美术学院，意大利伊尔皮诺美术馆等多地展出。
Zhang Lingjie, born in 1999 in Wuxi, Jiangsu, graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the China Academy of Art in 2021. He is currently a graduate student in the Fourth Studio of the Oil Painting Department at the same institution and participated in an exchange program at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in September 2023. Zhang's work focuses on the opposition between desire and reason and the contradictions of modern life. He often uses metaphorical symbols to subtly construct stage-like settings, employing cold and dreamlike colors to create contemporary urban allegories that blur the line between reality and fantasy. By embedding numerous "Easter eggs" and creating interplays among the details within his compositions, Zhang enhances the readability of his graphic novel-like images. His works have been exhibited in various venues, including the Zhejiang Provincial Exhibition Hall, the China Academy of Art Museum, the Zhejiang Art Museum, the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, the Hongmiao Art Center in Shanghai, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and the Il Pino Art Museum in Italy.
