“因缘聚合时,其果定成熟”
When the Right Causes and Conditions Gather, the Fruit Must Ripen
对因果要有一定的信解,这是佛教徒最起码的条件。
The most basic criterion for being a Buddhist is to have a degree of understanding of and belief in cause and effect.
倘若对因果没有信心,
If you have no confidence in cause and effect,
哪怕修再甚深的法,
then even if you cultivate the most profound Dharma,
也不会有什么成效。
it will not have much of a result.
大家首先应明白,果报是众生的业所感召的。
Everyone should first understand that retribution is caused by living beings’ karma.
而业又有善、有恶,
Karma may be wholesome or unwholesome.
有定业、有不定业,
With both types of karma,there is that which must ripen, that which may not ripen,
有今生受的、有来世受的,
that which must ripen in this life, and that which will ripen in a future life.
来世中又有下一世受的、有好多世之后受的。
Within this last type of karma there is also that which will ripen in the next life and that which will ripen in many lifetimes.
所以,众生的业感,在时间、果报上各不相同。
Thus, living beings’ experiences of karma differ in terms of time span and retribution.
现在有些人认为:“我今天造一个善业,马上就要成熟善报;
Sometimes people believe, “If I do a good deed today, it will surely ripen immediately as a wholesome result;
今天造一个恶业,很快就会受到恶报。”
if I commit a harmful deed today, I will experience the negative result very soon.”
这是不了解因果的缘故,
This belief comes from not understanding cause and effect.
若真正了解的话,
If there is true understanding,
当知“因缘聚合时,其果定成熟”。
one should know that “when the right causes and conditions come together, their fruit must ripen.”
还有些人说:“我一生念佛、参禅,造了许多布施等善业,
There are also those who say, “Throughout my life I have chanted the name of Amitabha,meditated, and done many good deeds like making generous donations.
但心里仍是烦恼不断,
Yet my mind is still overwhelmed with afflictions,
家庭不和顺,
my family life discordant,
生意又不好,
and my business unsuccessful.
不知三宝的加持哪里去了?
Where have the Three Jewels’blessings gone?
因果是虚妄的吧!”
Cause and effect must be false!”
这是很大的邪见。
This is a significantly wrong view.
要知道,就算是释迦牟尼佛,也从没讲过造业是即造即成熟,
Even Shakyamuni Buddha never said that karma is sown and reaped in quick succession.
而是说“百劫不毁灭”
Rather, he taught that it is “indestructible in one hundred aeons”
——就算经过了一百个大劫,业果也不会消失毁灭。
—that is, even after one hundred aeons have passed, the karma will not disappear or be destroyed.
或许又有人问:“佛陀在世时,许多人修行能立即证果,
Someone might ask, “When Buddha was in the world, many people became enlightened as soon as they started to practice;
善恶也是现世现报。
also, wholesome and unwholesome karma were sown and reaped in one lifetime.
而如今,众生修行不能如此,
Yet today, living beings’practices are not like that,
and karmic retribution also cannot occur quickly.
这是为什么呢?”
Why is this so?”
原因很简单。
The reason is very simple.
因为佛陀住世时是果法期,
The era when the Buddha lived was the Dharma age of fruition;
众生的根基比较利,
living beings at that time had the sharpest faculties,
修行后马上就会证果,
so as soon as they practiced, they attained enlightenment.
尤其是证小乘圣果非常快;
In particular, attaining the Hinayana [foundational] levels of enlightenment happened very quickly.
而现在是末法期,
This, however, is the Dharma age of degeneration;
众生的根基明显大不如前,
living beings’ faculties are clearly inferior to those of the past,
业报成熟也没有那么快了。
and karmic ripening is also not as fast.
但即便如此,业力的本性也不会改变,
But even though this is so, the nature of karma does not change.
正所谓“纵经百千劫,所造业不亡”。
It is still true that even after hundreds and thousands of aeons, the karma we have created will not be destroyed.
只要我们现在好好修行,
As long as we earnestly practice now,
迟早有一天,定会证得相应的果位。
sooner or later, we will obtain the corresponding fruits of attainment.
