Are your overseas friends often worried about not being able to use WeChat Pay without a domestic bank card? It can be inconvenient when they visit China, and even online shopping on some Chinese e-commerce websites becomes impossible due to payment restrictions.

Good news!

During a sub-forum at the Summer Davos held in Tianjin on Wednesday (June 28th), Tencent's Vice President of Financial Technology, Chen Qiru, revealed that starting from mid to late July, WeChat Pay will gradually open its merchant network to international card organizations such as VISA.

This means that overseas users will be able to bind their international credit cards and debit cards to WeChat Pay for making payments to merchants in China. Chen Qiru mentioned that WeChat Pay began pilot testing in 2019, allowing overseas users to bind international cards for consumption at selected pilot merchants, such as China Railway 12306 ticketing platform, JD.com, Ctrip, etc. From mid to late July, WeChat Pay will be fully open to international cards.

However, despite binding overseas bank cards, red packets and transfers are still not available!

It is understood that the newly opened online and offline merchant scenarios include but are not limited to supermarkets, dining, hotel accommodations, transportation, and other merchants, covering various aspects of daily life.

Nevertheless, overseas users still cannot perform personal transfers or send red packets through WeChat Pay after binding their international cards.

Mastercard, on the other hand, announced last week that overseas cardholders can link their credit cards or debit cards to Alipay digital wallet, allowing them to "pay like a local."

The new policy will enable Tencent and Ant Group to open up their entire ecosystem to foreign bank cards, allowing foreign tourists to use various payment functions ranging from purchasing fast food to opening life insurance.
