Making requests is common in daily life. How should we make requests according to specific relationships and occasions? Let’s have a look.

Please
“请”是最常用的表达请求的礼貌用语。
“请(qǐnɡ)” is the most common polite expression for making requests.
例 | Eg.
①请出示你的学生证。
②携带大件行李的乘客请乘坐升降电梯。
① Please show your student ID.
②All passengers with heavy luggage, please take the elevator.

麻烦/拜托/劳驾
Sorry to bother you/Could you assist me with/Excuse me
常用的表达请求的礼貌用语,与“请”相比更加委婉。“麻烦”突出请求之事给他人带来的负担,“拜托”重点强调托人办事,“劳驾”则主要用于请别人做事或让路。
These commonly used polite expressions for making requests are more euphemistic than “请(qǐnɡ).” “麻烦(máfɑn)” highlights the potential trouble caused to others in making the request; “拜托(bàituō)” emphasizes the obligations imposed on others to do things, and “劳驾(láojià)” is mainly used to ask for help or to ask others to make way.

①麻烦问一下,卫生间在哪里?
②这件事就拜托你了!
③劳驾您让一下。
① Sorry to bother you, where is the bathroom?
② Could you assist me with this matter?
③ Excuse me—coming through.

表达请求的句末语气词,常用在非正式场合。

可以/能……吗?
Could you/Do you mind...?
通过询问对方意愿的方式来表达请求。
Used to make requests by asking the intention of the other party.
例 | Eg.
①可以帮我倒杯水吗?
②你能不能再唱一遍那首歌?
①Could you pour me a glass of water?
②Do you mind singing the song one more time?

.……好/行/成/可以吗?

通过询问对方意愿的方式来表达请求。
Used to make requests by asking about the intention of the other party.

④最近有点忙,稿子我晚两天交,可不可以?

想/希望
I want/hope
通过提出希望和需求的方式来表达请求,可以用于熟人之间,也可以用于上级对下级表达要求的场合。
Used to make requests by expressing hopes and needs; appropriate for acquaintances; also applicable by superiors in proposing requirements to subordinates.
例 | Eg.
①(小朋友对家长)我想要一个手机当生日礼物。
②(上司对员工)我希望你能提高工作效率。
③(餐厅点餐)我想点一只烤鸭。
①(Child to parent) I want a mobile phone for my birthday present.
②(Boss to employee) I hope you can improve your work efficiency.
③(Ordering in a restaurant) I want a roast duck.

表达强烈的请求意愿。
Used to make a request with strong emotion.

①医生,我求求您了,您救救我的孩子吧!
②妈,我求您了,您让我娶她吧!

②Mom, I’m begging you, please let me marry her!
qiānwàn/wùbì/yídìng
千万/务必/一定
Do / By all means / Must
副词“千万、务必、一定”等也可以用来表达强烈的请求意愿。
These expressions can also be used to make a request with strong emotion.
例 | Eg.
①这件事,你千万别让我爸妈知道,免得他们担心!
②你务必亲自帮我把这封信交到他的手上!
③你一定要帮我保守这个秘密啊!
① Don’t let my parents know anything about this, lest they worry!
② You must personally send the letter to him!
③ Keep it secret by all means!
用暗示的方式来表达请求
Indirect expressions for making requests
不直接请求,而是提及与请求相关的因素或者背景,希望对方能领会言外之意。
Instead of directly making requests, indirect expressions are sometimes used, by mentioning the related factors or background, to hope that the other party can get the message on his or her own.
例 | Eg.
①(想让对方给自己做饭)妈,我饿了。
②(想要借车)你的新车好酷啊!我要是也能开这么酷的车带我女朋友去兜风就好了。
①(Wanting your mom to cook) Mom, I’m hungry.
②(Wanting to borrow a car) That new car of yours is so cool! If only I could take my girlfriend for a ride in such a cool car.
