South Korea is a country in northeast Asia. It borders North Korea and its capital city is Seoul, which is a major global city and hosts almost half of the South Korea’s population. Its official language is Korean. Taegukgi is the national flag of South Korea, it has a white background with a red and blue taegeuk (Yin-yang) in the center, and four black trigrams each facing towards the four corners of the flag.

National Anthem 国歌
The national anthem of South Korea is “Aegukga”, meaning “The Patriotic Song.”

Hibiscus syriacus is the national flower of South Korea. The flower appears in national emblems, and Korea is compared poetically to the flower in the South Korean national anthem.

National Bird 国鸟
The Korean Magpie is the unofficial National Bird. Still, it is the most popular among Korean, and its breed extends from China, Korea, to Himalayan regions bordering India, Pakistan, and Nepal.

In the 1960s, South Korea’s leadership and people found that survival depends on economic growth. They came to realize that, being land-poor with a large population, rapid growth required exporting large amounts of goods and services. Exports went from nearly zero to more than 50 percent of GDP today, with China replacing the United States as Korea’s biggest market. Imports also grew nearly as rapidly. The tax and regulatory system greatly favored companies that exported and developed heavy industries, such as shipbuilding and automobile manufacturing. Many of these earlier subsidies and tax and regulatory incentives have now been reduced, giving the country a more balanced and internationally compliant system.

A strong emphasis was placed on education, particularly science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects. Korea now has one of the best-educated populations and skilled workforces in the world. It has also increasingly improved the rule of law, strengthened and stabilized the currency leading to low inflation. Levels of taxation and government spending are slightly lower than in the other developed nations, but still above the optimum level.

The city displays Korean culture and blending traditional history with modern architecture. The National Museum of Korea exhibits some artifacts from Korea’s past.

Namdaemun Market is a large traditional market in Seoul. It is located next to Namdaemun, the “Great South Gate,” which was the main southern gate to the old city. It is the oldest and largest market in Korea.

Busan 釜山
This is the second-largest city in the country. It is where the largest port city in South Korea is located, which is the fifth in the world. The city hosted the Asian Games in 2002 and in the same year, it also became one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup.

Changwon 昌原市
Even though this city has high-tech facilities and technologies, its natural environment is still unharmed and intact. There are five big department stores such as Home Plus, Daedong, Newcoa Outlet, Lotte and Emart. The city has lots of gardens and parks that you will be able to visit. Some of the popular spots include the Yongji Park which has a small lake that contains jet-like fountains and provides entertainment through laser light show at the nighttime. You can also look at the Junam Reservoir, which is the largest bird migration site in the country. This hosts a birdwatching festival every year.

This city is known as one of the major cities in Korea with its progressive development, especially in the field of fashion and technology. This is where the Gatbawi can be seen, a stone Buddha that many believe to grant wishes and desires. You may also want to visit its popular temples that include Pagyesa, Buinsa and Donghwasa. All these places contain artifacts that mirror the city’s rich past.

Daejeon is now hailed as the cradle of Korea’s cutting-edge science sector. Sikjangsan, located in the southeast part, in the southwest, there is the Mt. Gubongsan, Mt. Bomunsan and Mt. Jangtaensan in the south, and Mt. Gyejoksan in the northeast.
